Minneapolis, Minn. -- Down 2-0 early, the Creighton Baseball team rallied to defeat Minnesota 7-3 on Saturday, March 10.
The Bluejays claimed the series with their second consecutive 7-3 win, moving to 8-4 on the season. The loss dropped Minnesota to 10-6 overall.
The Golden Gophers plated two in the bottom of the first, stringing together a single, an RBI double from Toby Hanson and an RBI single by Cole McDevitt.
Creighton pulled even in the third thanks to junior Clark Brinkman and sophomore Isaac Collins. With one out in the frame, Brinkman was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a double to right by Collins. The Bluejay second baseman moved to third on a balk by Minnesota starter Nick Lackney, then scored on a wild pitch.
The game remained deadlocked at 2-2 into the sixth, when Creighton seized its first lead. Junior Michael Emodi led off the inning with a double to right center. He moved to third on a single from sophomore Will Robertson and scored on a sac fly from junior Thomas Luevano.
After Minnesota pulled even once more with a run in the seventh, Creighton took the lead for good with two runs in the eighth and added some insurance runs with two more in the ninth.
The Bluejays' two runs in the eighth were the product of a Robertson double, a wild pitch and another sac fly from Luevnao. This time, however, the ball to right off Luevano's bat was dropped. With two out in the frame, junior Ryan Mantle delivered an RBI double down the right field line.
Creighton's ninth inning tallies crossed the dish on a two-run double by Robertson, scoring Brinkman and junior Jack Strunc.
Senior Preston Church picked up the win (1-1) with an inning of scoreless relief, while junior Bobby Kamtes recorded the final four outs for his third save of the season. Despite a quality start, Creighton's Mitch Ragan was limited to a no decision as he allowed three runs on four hits in 6.1 innings of work.
Minnesota's Jackson Rose picked up the loss (2-1) as surrendered two runs (one earned) on one hit in two-thirds of an inning.Â
Robertson guided the Creighton offense with three hits, two RBI and a run scored.
Creighton goes for the series sweep on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 pm (CT).
