Manhattan, Kan. -- Fueled by home runs from juniors Michael Emodi, Ryan Mantle and sophomore Will Robertson as the Creighton Baseball team downed Kansas State, 13-3, on Tuesday, March 13.
The victory moved Creighton to 9-5 on the season, while Kansas State fell to 10-6 overall.
Creighton took advantage of two Wildcat errors in the opening inning to burst out to a 2-0 lead. The Wildcats, however, got once back in the bottom of first and pulled even in the third.
The Bluejays bats moved into high gear in the third as Emodi blasted his sixth home run of the season way over the left field wall to make it 5-2. Emodi brought home junior Ryan Mantle, who opened the inning with a single, and junior Clark Brinkman, who reached via a one-out walk.
Mantle tacked on another run in the fifth with his first home run, a solo shot to right. Leading 6-2, Creighton continued to pile on with three runs in the sixth and four in the seventh. Emodi delivered RBI singles in each frame, while Robertson delivered a two-run homer down the right-field line in the sixth and an RBI knock in the seventh.
While Creighton offense was rolling, the bullpen was equally impressive. After Bluejay starter Preston Church was lifted in the third, five different relievers limited the Wildcats to three hits over the next 5.1 innings.
Junior Evan Johnson picked up the win (1-1) for Creighton, retiring all three Kansas State hitters he faced. The loss went to Wildcat starter Quinton Potter (0-1), who allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks in 3.1 innings of work.
Emodi closed the game 4-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored, while Robertson was 3-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored.
The Bluejays return to the diamond on Friday, March 16 as Creighton opens its home schedule at 6:30 pm against Wichita State in TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.
