Omaha, Neb. -- Junior Michael Emodi blasted the Creighton Baseball team to a 3-1 win over Wichita State on Saturday, March 17 as the Bluejays took the series opener from the Shockers.
The win lifted Creighton to 10-5 on the season, while Wichita State fell to 12-4.
Wichita State starter Codi Hauer held the Bluejays until the sixth when junior Clark Brinkman laced a single to center. Sophomore Isaac Collins followed with a RBI triple to left-center to give Creighton a 1-0 lead.
Bluejay starter Ryan Tapani matched Hauer frame for frame, holding Wichita State off the scoreboard through seven innings.
Tapani returned to the bump in the eighth, retiring the first Shocker he faced before allowing a single to Jacob Katzfey. Tapani gave way to the pen, but with two down in the frame Wichita State got the equalizer.
Reliever Jonah Smith got the final out of the eighth and set Wichita State to the bench in the ninth to set up Emodi's heroics.
Collins opened the Bluejay ninth with a seven pitch walk, then Emodi smashed his seventh home run of the season on a 2-2 pitch to give the Bluejays the win.
Smith earned the win (2-0) with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, while Wichita State's Chandler Sanburn suffered the loss (0-1), yielding Emodi's walk-off blast in the ninth after tossing a scoreless frame in the eighth.
The Bluejays and Shockers wrap up their shortened series on Sunday, March 18. First pitch is slated for 12:00 pm.
