Creighton manages only one run during two games on Sunday
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Creighton softball team fell to Drake 2-1 and lost 8-0 in six innings against the host Missouri Tigers to conclude play at the Mizzou Tournament on Sunday in Columbia, Missouri.
The Bluejays moved to 8-6 overall, and finished the Mizzou Tournament with a 1-4 record.
After defeating the Bulldogs 2-1 on Saturday night, the Creighton fell to Drake by the same score on Sunday morning.
Starting pitchers Bryana Clark and Nicole Newman stole the show during the early portion of the game.
Clark faced the minimum through the first three innings, while Newman allowed only two base runners through the first 11 Bluejay hitters she faced.
Drake broke into the scoring column with two unearned runs during the top of the fourth. The Bulldogs worked a one-out walk and later scored the first run of the game following an error and sacrifice fly. The visitors on the scoreboard added to their lead with an RBI single to center field.
The Bluejays cut the deficit to a single run during the fifth. Jayci McGill doubled to deep left-center field and Sam Crowley singled through the left side to put runners on the corners with no outs. Kaitlynn Hunt, Creighton's next hitter, laid down a bunt in front of home plate and pinch-runner Kristin Fry broke for home. Drake's pitcher picked up the ball but hesitated before throwing it towards her catcher standing at home plate, allowing Fry to cross home safely and cut the Bulldog lead to 2-1.
Creighton continued to put pressure on the Bulldogs as Crowley reached third base on a sacrifice bunt by Tash Coffiel and turned the lineup over for lead-off hitter Ashley Cantu. Cantu appeared to have singled in the tying run, but the sophomore outfielder was called out for stepping outside of the batter's box on her slap attempt. A strikeout ended the inning with Crowley stranded 60 feet away from home.
Clark kept the Bluejays in the game with her performance in the circle as she allowed only two base runners during the final three innings. The senior allowed five hits and two unearned runs while striking out two and walking one during a complete-game effort.
Creighton threatened during the sixth and seventh frames, but left one on base during each of the final two innings.
Cantu, McGill and Crowley recorded the only Bluejay hits against Drake and only four others reached base.
During Creighton's second game of the day host Missouri shutout the Bluejays by a score of 8-0 in six innings.
Missouri put early pressure on the Bluejays with a lead-off single. A stolen base and error on the next pitch allowed the runner to reach third before a sacrifice fly to center field drove in the first run of the game.
Neither team recorded another hit during the first three innings following the lead-off single.
Creighton recorded its first runner of the game during the fourth inning as Courtney Sandell drew a full-count walk. The Bluejays could not cash in as a pick-off and fly out ended the inning.
Missouri padded its lead with a pair of extra-base hits during the bottom of the fourth. McGill jumped to snag a liner towards second, but the ball glanced off her glove and into right-center field for a double. Kolby Romaine followed the double with a two-run home run to left field and gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead.
The Bluejays had their best opportunity during the top of the fifth. Jordyn Sturgeon led off the inning with a walk and McGill singled down the left-field line to give Creighton runners at first and second with no outs. A double play advanced pinch-runner Fry to third base but also recorded two quick outs. Crowley laid down a bunt in an attempt to leg out a single and drive in Fry, but Missouri's third baseman beat Crowley by less than a step with her throw to first.
The Tigers used a sacrifice fly during the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-0 lead.
Missouri ended the game with four runs during the bottom of the sixth inning, capped by a two-RBI single to left field.
