Plymouth Meeting, Pa. -- Needing to sweep the final BIG EAST series, senior Ryan Tapani stepped up to show his squad he was ready to fight with a complete game shutout win over Villanova on Friday, May 11.
The victory pushed the Bluejays to 29-15 on the season and 6-9 in BIG EAST action, while Villanova fell to 8-34 overall and 0-13 in conference play.
It was the Bluejays' first complete game since Keith Rogalla went the distance against St. John's on April 9, 2017 and Creighton's first complete game shutout since Rollie Lacy do so to the Red Storm on April 17, 2015.
Things didn't start off easy for Tapani as the first Wildcat hitter reached on an error, then moved to second via a pass ball. Refusing to be rattled, the Minnesota native set down the next 16 Villanova hitters in order.
Creighton's offense gave Tapani some support with single runs in both the third and fourth frames.
In the third sophomore Jason Allbery lifted a fly ball to left that was lost in the sun. The result was a triple for the Creighton first baseman, followed by an RBI ground out from freshman Evan Spry.
Creighton's run in the fourth came on a single from sophomore Isaac Collins, a grounder that moved him to second, a failed picked that moved Collins to third and an RBI single to left from junior Jack Strunc.
Carrying a no-hitter into the sixth, Tapani faced his toughest frame of the contest. After getting the first out on a grounder to short, Tapani hit Pat O'Neil to give the Wildcats two runners for the first time. After a tapper to first moved both Wildcats up 90 feet, Tapani issued his lone walk of the game to load the bases. Facing Villanova's best hitter, Ryan Toohers, Tapani forced the first basemen to swing threw a 3-2 breaking ball.
Creighton added to its lead in the seventh on consecutive doubles from junior Ryan Mantle and Allbery.
The fourth Bluejay run came in the eighth as Collins walked, took second on a pass ball, then scored via an RBI single from sophomore Will Robertson.
The win moved Tapani to 9-1 on the season, as he notched 12 strikeouts in the victory. Villanova's Jonathan Rosero took the loss (1-7), allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits in 6.1 innings.
The Bluejays and Wildcats will continue their three-game series on Saturday at 10:00 am (CT), weather concerns have forced the teams to play a doubleheader on Saturday.
