Plymouth Meeting, Pa. -- For the second straight game Creighton pitchers refused to give up the ball as the Bluejay baseball team downed Villanova 6-1 in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, May 12.
Following senior Ryan Tapani's complete game shutout yesterday, junior Mitch Ragan limited the Wildcats to one run in nine innings with an impressive 12 strikeouts to earn the win (5-4). This marks the first time under head coach Ed Servais that Creighton has seen pitchers deliver consecutive nine-inning complete game performances.
Creighton moved to 30-15 on the season and 7-9 in BIG EAST action with the victory, while Villanova fell to 8-35 overall and 0-14 in conference play.
Ragan was on from the start, striking out the first three Wildcat hitters and ringing up six in the opening three frames.
Creighton's offensive, meanwhile, pushed across the first run of the game in the top of the fourth. Junior Michael Emodi was hit by a pitch to open the frame, then moved to second on a wild pitch. Emodi was sacrificed to third by junior Jack Strunc, then scored on an RBI single from Thomas Luevano.
Ragan, meanwhile, worked around a leadoff double in the fourth to keep the lead.
The Bluejays added two runs in the fifth as Evan Spry reached on a one-out clear hit to center, although ruled an error. Clark Brinkman walked to put runners at first and second, then both Bluejays advanced 90 feet on a fly out to right. Sophomore Will Robertson made the Wildcats pay for pitching to him with a two-run single up the middle.
Back on the bump in the fifth, Ragan saw Villanova load the bases on a single, an error, a sacrifice and a walk. The right-hander worked out of the jam with a sacrifice fly to left and a grounder to yield just one run.
Creighton's offense added an insurance run in the sixth and two more in the ninth, but it wasn't needed as Ragan did not allowed a base runner the rest of the way.
The Bluejays' run in the sixth came on an RBI double from junior Ryan Mantle, while the ninth inning tallies were courtesy of a pass ball and an RBI single by junior Clark Brinkman.
Ragan's counterpart Jimmy Kingsbury was impressive in the loss (0-8), allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits in six innings of work.
Offensively the Bluejays got two hits from Roberston, Luevano, Mantle and Allbery to lead the way.
The two teams will wrap up their three-game series shortly with the second game of the doubleheader slated to begin at approximately 1:30 pm (CT).
