Plymouth Meeting, Pa. -- Trailing 2-1 in the eighth inning, a dropped fly ball set the stage for junior Michael Emodi to deliver in the clutch once more. The Bluejay catcher came through with a line drive two-run home run to left field that proved to be the difference as Creighton Baseball defeated Villanova 3-2 to sweep the doubleheader from the Wildcats as well as the series on Saturday, May 12.
The win pushed Creighton to 31-15 on the season and gave the Bluejays an 8-9 mark at the end of their BIG EAST play. Villanova, meanwhile, fell to 8-36 on the season and 0-15 in conference play. It was also the Wildcats 14th one-run loss of the season, falling to 1-14 in one-run contests.
After being held to just one run in the first two games, Villanova wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the finale. The Wildcats scored both of their runs in the opening frame, getting a two-out single from Ryan Toohers and a two-run homer to left from JP Radvany.
Creighton drew within one run in the fifth as junior Ryan Mantle opened the frame with a double to left-center. The Bluejay left fielder moved to third on a sac bunt from sophomore Jason Allbery, then scored on a wild pitch.
The turning point in the game came at the onset of the eighth. Sophomore Will Robertson lifted a pop fly into short left, but the Villanova shortstop and left fielder narrowly missed running into one another as the ball dropped. Robertson alertly raced to second on the play. With the game in the balance, head coach Ed Servais choose not to bunt. Villanova countered by going to the bullpen for Zach Lutner. Emodi battled the Wildcat reliever to a 3-2 count before launching a no doubt home run to left. It was Emodi's eighth of the season.
A combination of three relievers got the final six outs for the Bluejays to secure the sweep.
Sophomore Mitch Boyer earned the win (3-0) with 1.2 innings of hitless relief, while junior Bobby Kametas got the final three outs to record his sixth save of the season.
The Bluejays return home for their final midweek game of the season on Tuesday as Creighton hosts UNO in its annual Cox Kids Day at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha. First pitch is set for 11 am.
