OMAHA, Neb. -- Shea Wendt threw a career-high seven innings of one-run ball to lead Creighton Baseball to a 9-1 win over Seton Hall on Saturday, April 11 inside Charles Schwab Field Omaha.
Wendt (2-0) whiffed a career-high eight batters in the game, striking out the side in the top of the seventh inning to cap his day after 100 pitches. It was his fifth straight outing allowing exactly one run for the reliever turned starter.
Creighton improved to 17-15 with its third consecutive win, moving two games over .500 for the first time this spring. CU is also 3-2 in BIG EAST play with the victory. Seton Hall dropped to 11-15 and is winless in five league contests.
Seton Hall scored its lone run of the series to date in the top of the first inning. Gabe Cavazzo walked, stole second base and later scored on an RBI ground out by Nick Tomaset.
The Bluejays opened their scoring in the bottom of the first as Teddy Deters coaxed a two-out walk before coming home on Ben North's double to the wall.
Creighton took advantage of wildness by Seton Hall starter Jason Kuhn to take the lead in the second inning. Kuhn hit two batters, walked one, and gave up a pair of hits in a two-run second. Nate McHugh's two-run single scored Nick Venteicher and Lew Rice to make it 3-1.
North walked to start the third inning and end Kuhn's afternoon. The Bluejay graduate student would come around to score on a sac fly by Connor Capece.
The Jays added to their lead in the fifth inning with two more runs. Isaac Wachsman singled to score Teddy Deters, and Wachsmann would score on an RBI single by Capece. Both runs would be unearned.
CU's next tally came in the seventh as Deters singled, stole both second and third, and trotted home on Wachsmann's deep fly ball to center.
Creighton closed the scoring with another crooked number in the eighth inning, as McHugh's bases-loaded single made it 9-1.
Capece had his third three-hit game of the season, and McHugh drove home four batters. Deters scored three times and tied a CU single-game record with three stolen bases. On the mound, Max McClellan authored a scoreless eighth inning and Joe Hauser earned the final three outs.
Kuhn fell to 1-2 with the loss, as he allowed four runs in two innings of work.
The teams will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday at 10 am (CT)
