Crowley claimed a 3.94 GPA and hit .400 for the Bluejays
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton softball's Sam Crowley earned a spot on the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Crowley recently completed her undergraduate studies in neuroscience with a 3.94 GPA. The Green Bay, Wisconsin native, claimed a spot on the NFCA All-Great Lakes Region Third Team and the All-BIG EAST First Team after pacing the Bluejays with a .633 slugging percentage and ranking third in the BIG EAST with a .400 batting average.
The outfielder did not commit an error while playing 41 games in center field and owned 17 sacrifice hits to lead Division I with 0.41 sacrifice hits per game. She also scored 29 times, drove in 33 runs and hit a Bluejay-best seven home runs while helping Creighton finish the 2018 season with a 28-15 record, including a 12-3 mark during BIG EAST play (second place). The Bluejays also advanced to the title game at the 2018 BIG EAST Championship presented by Jeep in Rosemont, Illinois before falling to DePaul.
She is the first Creighton softball player to earn First Team Academic All-America laurels since Christine Fukumoto in 2005, and fifth overall. Crowley joins Jean Tierney (1983), Christy Lunceford (1997), Heidi Geier (1999), and Fukumoto as the five Bluejay softball players to earn First Team honors.Â
Additionlly, Crowley, Tierney, Lunceford, Geier and Fukumoto are the only female student-athletes in Creighton history to claim first-team academic honors from CoSIDA. Rick Apke (men's basketball, 1978) and Tyler Clement (men's basketball, 2018) are the Bluejays' lone male student-athletes to garner First Team Academic All-America honors.Â
Of the 33 members on the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division I Softball Team, 29 have at least a 3.90 G.P.A., with 19 student-athletes maintaining a 4.00 GPA (or better) as either undergraduate or graduate students. The 11 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.97.
