Bluejays Only BIG EAST Squad to Post Result at Georgetown in Two Seasons, Have Done So Twice
Washington, D.C. -- For the second time in three seasons the Creighton women's soccer team delivered a shocking result in the nation's capital, posting a 2-2 draw at #10 Georgetown on Sunday, Oct. 13. Creighton also battled the Hoyas to a draw at Shaw Field in 2016, the only BIG EAST team to earn a result at the Hoyas' home pitch during the last three years.
Creighton moved to 7-5-2 on the season and 1-2-2 in BIG EAST play following Sunday's draw, while Georgetown is 10-2-2 overall and 4-0-1 in conference action.
The Bluejays struck first with a pair of goals in the opening half. Senior Ashleigh Cearlock put the Bluejays on top in the 18th minute, connecting from just outside the box at approximately 25 yards away. Fellow senior Lauren Harkes set the play in motion from the center of the pitch by sliding a pass to right side for the opening tally of the match.
Creighton extended its lead to 2-0 in the 42nd minute as sophomore Ansley Atkinson hammered home a free kick from the left side from a similar distance that Cearlock connected, approximately 25 yards. The foul that afforded Atkinson's shot was setup by freshman Skylar Heinrich drawing a foul from the Hoyas as she began to break free down the middle of the pitch.
The Bluejays took its 2-0 edge into halftime. As expected the Hoyas played with renewed offensive urgency in the second half, firing off 13 shots in the half. Two of those 13 shots, however, found the back of the net for Georgetown. The Hoyas made it a 2-1 match in the 64th minute behind a goal from Julia Leas. Just over nine minutes later Georgetown got the equalizer in the 73rd minute from Sofie Fox.
The match remained knotted at 2-2 through the end of regulation as well as both ten minute overtime sessions
After managing just two shots in the second half, Creighton's raised their offensive intensity in the overtime as the Bluejays equaled the Hoyas with three shots in the extra sessions.
Georgetown closed the match out shooting Creighton, 22-11, and holding a 13-3 edge on corners.
The Bluejays return to Omaha for their next contest as Creighton hosts Providence on Saturday, Oct. 19th at Morrison Stadium at 1:00 pm. Prior to kickoff the Bluejays will honor its senior class of Emma Braasch, Jaylin Bosak, Cearlock, Kylin Grubb, Harkes, Taryn Jakubowski, Kate Johnson, Cassie Legband and Alyssa Swift.
