Down 10 at the half, the Bluejays outscore Hoyas 24-7 in third to claim win
Washington, D.C. -- Senior Jaylyn Agnew delivered 20 of game-high 23 in the second half to lead the Creighton women's basketball team to a 65-56 win over Georgetown in the BIG EAST opener on Sunday, Dec. 29th.
The win moved the Bluejays to 9-3 on the season and 1-0 in BIG EAST action, while Georgetown fell to 3-9 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Trailing 33-23 at the break, Agnew returned to the floor with a fire Bluejay fans saw in her 34-point effort against #23 West Virginia earlier this season. The Kansas native opened the second half with a personal 7-0 run, punctuated by a traditional three-point play to bring the Bluejays within three at 33-30 (7:45).
Following a pair of Georgetown free throws, sophomore Gracey Griglione and junior Temi Carda delivered consecutive jumpers to start a Bluejay surge of 12 straight points. Down 35-34, Carda connected from the top of the arc to put Creighton on top, then Agnew delivered another trey. Finally Carda capped the run with a driving layup to put the Bluejays up 42-35 (3:00). The Bluejays held their seven-point edge as the game went to the final frame, 47-40, outscoring Georgetown 24-7 in the third quarter.
Agnew opened the fourth with another trifecta, giving Creighton a double-digit edge. The Bluejays went on to lead by as much as 12 points twice in the fourth, the final time coming on a three-point play from sophomore Rachael Saunders with 3:42 remaining (61-49).
Agnew led all scorers with 23 points, while Carda finished with 16 points and fellow senior Olivia Elger contributed 11 points. Georgetown got a team-high 16 points from Taylor Barnes in the loss, including nine from the free throw line.
Early in the game both teams struggled as the Bluejays opened 1-of-8 (12.5%) from the field, yet trailed just 4-3 (4:58). Coming out of the first media timeout Creighton and Georgetown traded treys. With just over three minutes left in the period, sophomore Chloe Dworak knocked down a three-pointer from the wing to put Creighton back on top, 9-7 (3:09). Georgetown, however, scored the final five points in the quarter to take a 12-9 edge into the second.
The Hoyas extended their run to 13-0 with the first eight points of the second quarter. Georgetown went on to push its lead to as much as 14 points at 29-15 with 3:51 left in the half. Creighton responded with consecutive buckets, getting a three-ball from Carda and a driving layup by Saunders, to get back within single digits (29-20).
The final play of the half showed the Bluejays had no intention of laying down as Carda took a charge to deny a Hoyas' basket, sending the teams to the locker rooms with Creighton down 33-23.
