Lake Charles, La. -- Ignited by a trio of solo home runs in the first three frames, the Creighton Baseball team defeated Texas State 6-5 on Friday, Feb. 22. The win moved the Bluejays to 4-0 on the season, while the Bobcats fell to 2-2 overall.
Junior Parker Upton got the Bluejays on the board in the bottom of the first with a blast to left center. The second inning saw senior Jordan Hovey clear the right field wall, while sophomore Garrett Gilbert opened the third with a round tripper to center to push Creighton out to a 3-0 edge.
The Bluejays added two more runs in the fourth as freshman Jake Holton led off with a triple to right-center, then fellow freshman Jared Wegner delivered an RBI single with two down. After Wegner swiped second, Gilbert brought him home with an RBI single up the middle.
Staked to a 5-0 lead, Creighton starter Mitch Ragan cruised into the sixth inning allowing just two hits. Ragan ran into a little trouble in the sixth, surrendering a pair of doubles as Texas State got two runs in the frame.
Creighton answered with a run in the sixth as junior Jason Allbery reached on a bunt single, stole second and scored via Gilbert's third RBI knock of the contest.
Ragan went on to allow four runs in seven plus innings on six hits and a walk, striking out six. Closer Bobby Kametas worked a perfect ninth to pick up his second save in four game.
Creighton returns to the diamond for a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 23 as the Bluejays face Texas State at 1:00 pm, then battle tournament host McNeese State at 4:00 pm.
