Faber and Carda Combine for 35 to Lead Women's Basketball to 73-64 Win at Providence

Providence, R.I. -- Led by a combined 35 points from senior Audrey Faber and sophomore Temi Carda, the Creighton women's basketball team defeated Providence 73-64 in the Bluejays final BIG EAST road game of the season on Saturday, Feb. 23.
The win pushed the Bluejays to 13-14 on the season and 7-9 in BIG EAST action, while Providence fell to 16-12 overall and 8-8 in conference play.
Down 8-4 early in the contest, Creighton rattled off 10 of the next 11 points to seize control. Faber got the Bluejays rolling with a 12-footer, then freshman Rachael Saunders cut to the bucket for a traditional three-point play to give Creighton a 9-8 edge. Faber pushed the lead to 11-8 with another mid-range jumper. Providence interrupted Creighton's run with a free thrown, but freshman Payton Brotzki answered with a corner trey to make it 14-9 with 2:34 left in the first quarter. Faber scored 10 of her game-high 21 points in the opening period as the Bluejays led 18-15 after one quarter.
Providence pulled within one point twice in the opening moments of the second, but consecutive trifectas from senior Jade Owens pushed Creighton's edge back to seven at 26-19 (6:19).Carda stepped forward in the final six minutes of the period, delivering seven straight points for the Jays to make it 35-27 with 2:49 remaining. Creighton's defense held the Friars off the scoreboard for the final 3:10 of the first half to send the teams to halftime with the Bluejays up 37-27.
A slow start in the second half helped Providence chip into Creighton's advantage, drawing within four at 47-43 with 2:28 left in the frame. Both Faber and sophomore Tatum Rembao kept the Friars at bay with two from the charity stripe, then Rembao drilled a trifecta in with two seconds left in the period to make give the Bluejays a 56-47 lead entering the final ten minutes.
Clutch treys from Faber and Owens in the fourth as well as 5-of-8 from the free throw line secured the Creighton victory as Providence got no closer than seven points in the final period.
Faber's 21 led Creighton, while Carda posted 14 points and nine rebounds to lead that category. Providence had five players finish in double figures, led by 15 points from Maddie Jolin.
Creighton closes the regular season at home next weekend as the Bluejays host Marquette (March 1) and DePaul (March 3).
