BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Creighton women's tennis team fell 4-2 to Illinois State during the Redbird Invitational on Saturday morning at the Bloomington Tennis Center.
The Bluejays dropped their season record to 2-5, while the Redbirds improved to 7-3. Creighton will face Toledo or Southeast Missouri on Sunday at 9 a.m. in Bloomington for third place.
All three doubles matches were needed to decide the first point of Saturday's match. Illinois State started the morning with a 6-2 win at the No. 2 position before Ashley Ishimura and Sarah Wilcox evened the score with a 6-4 victory at the top slot. The Redbirds claimed a 6-3 win in the No. 3 doubles match to secure the first point heading into singles play.
Creighton claimed the first singles match as Meredith Benson earned a 6-3 decision in the first set at No. 6 and won the match by default.
Illinois State regained the lead with a straight-sets victory during the No. 3 match, but Ishimura earned a close 6-4, 6-4 win at the top spot to tie the overall dual at 2-2.
The host Redbirds pulled in front with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 4 as Erin Epperson dropped both sets by close margins.
Claire Embree fell 6-2 during the first set at the No. 5 position before battling back for a 6-4 win in the second frame. Illinois State's Laura Fitzgerald ended the overall match with 6-2 win in the deciding third set against Embree.
Sarah Wilcox won the first set at No. 2, dropped the second and was tied during the third set at 2-2 before the match was decided.
"Illinois State showed why they are now 7-3 with some strong wins by winning the bigger points at enough position," head coach Tom Lilly said. "There is a fine line between winning and losing in our matches and we just need to be a little better tomorrow."
The Bluejays will stay in the Bloomington, Illinois area and face either Toledo or Southeast Missouri on Sunday at 9 a.m. for the third-place match at the Redbird Invitational.
