Men's Tennis Falls 5-2 During Crosstown Matchup Against UNO

OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton men's tennis team fell 5-2 against Nebraska-Omaha on Friday night in front of a lively crowd at the Hanscom Indoor Tennis Center.
The Bluejays dropped their season record to 2-6, while the Mavericks improved to 3-8.
An estimated 100 fans attended the dual between the crosstown foes.
The Mavericks took the first point of the night with wins at the No. 2 and 3 doubles positions. UNO started the action with a 6-3 win at the No. 3 position.
Creighton's Stratton Brown and Mac Mease rallied for a come-from-behind victory at the top doubles position to even doubles play. The Bluejay duo trailed 4-3 before storming back with wins during the next three games for a 6-4 decision.
UNO ended the doubles action moments later with a 6-4 win at the No. 2 slot.
Mease started Creighton on the winning side of singles with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at the No. 6 position.
The Mavs regained the overall lead with a straight-sets win at during the No. 4 singles match and took a 3-1 edge thanks to a 6-4, 6-4 victory at the top spot.
The final three singles matches each went three sets.
Brown won his first set at No. 2, while Armando Gandini (No. 3) and Jose Oscar Diaz (No. 5) each battled back for victories in the second set after falling during the opening frames.
UNO secured the team victory with a three-set win at the No. 3 position. Gandini fell 7-5 in the first frame, won 6-2 in the second and dropped a 6-1 game in the deciding set.
The Mavericks earned a tiebreaker victory during the No. 2 match. Brown earned a 6-2 win in the opening set but fell 6-1 in the second and 7-6, including 7-5 in a tiebreaker, during the final frame.
Jose Oscar Diaz ended the night with a tiebreaker victory during the No. 5 singles match. Diaz fell 6-2 in the first set and evened the match with a 7-5 win in the second. In the deciding set, the sophomore won 7-5 in a tiebreaker to give the Bluejays their second victory of the night.
"We knew that this would be a great college match that could go either way and the Mavs stepped up and played just a little better," head coach Tom Lilly said. "The doubles point and a few singles were as close as you can get and we have to give credit to coach Thomas and his staff and players for being better than us tonight."
Creighton returns to the courts on Sunday morning for a match against Chicago State at 11 a.m.
