Women's Basketball Advances to BIG EAST Semifinals with 60-51 Win Over Butler

Chicago, Ill. -- A true team effort helped the Creighton women's basketball team best Butler by the score of 60-51 in the BIG EAST Championship quarterfinals on Sunday, March 10.
The win pushed the Bluejays to 15-15 on the season, while Butler fell to 21-9 overall.
Getting an emotional lift as Ali Greene continued her comeback by starting her second consecutive game, Creighton came out firing on all cylinders on offense in the opening quarter. Greene scored scored the opening bucket of the game. Moments later junior Jaylyn Agnew knocked down a trey from the corner, then Greene hit her first three-pointer in her four-year career from the top of the key to give Creighton an 8-5 edge. The Bluejays went on to scored 21 points in the opening frame, taking a 21-15 lead after one.
Early in the second quarter Agnew continued to connect from long range, hitting an early trey to push the Bluejay edge to 26-17 with 8:02 left. Butler, however, countered with stifling defense as the Bulldogs limited Creighton to three points throught the remainder of the frame sending the squads to the locker rooms with Creighton holding a 29-27 advantage.
The third quarter saw Butler take its first lead of the game at 31-29 (6:14), but Creighton countered with a three-ball from sophomore Temi Carda to reclaim the lead at 32-31. The two teams battled back and forth throughout the third, with the Bluejays holding a 43-42 edge heading to the final period.
Down the stretch the Bluejays got contributions from five different players, led by five points from sophomore Tatum Rembao in the fourth quarter. The turning point in the contest came early in the fourth as Carda and Rembao each connected with layups to push Creighton out to a 49-42 (8:07). Creighton's advantage melted as low as four at 51-47 (5:21), but an interior bucket from senior Audrey Faber and an mid-range shot from junior Olivia Elger helped the Jays push out to a 55-47 lead with 1:26 left.
Three Bluejays finished in double figures, led by Agnew with 13. Also closing in double figures were Elger with 11 points and Faber with 10 points. Butler got a game-high 16 points from Tori Schickel.
Creighton returns to the hardwood on Monday, March 11 as the Bluejays face off with the two-seeded DePaul Blue Demons at 5:30 pm.
