Baseball Sweeps Midweek Series with Saint Louis with 9-4 Win

St. Louis, Mo. -- A strong start from Ben Dotzler and nine runs from the offense guided the Creighton baseball team to a 9-4 win over Saint Louis on Wednesday, March 13.
The win gave Creighton the two-game sweep of the Billikens, moving the Bluejays to 7-3 on the season. Saint Louis fell to 6-9 overall.
Trailing 1-0 early in the game, the Bluejays plated three runs in the third inning on two hits and a Billiken error. Junior Jason Allbery opened the frame with a bunt single, then stole second. One out later, junior Will Hanafan reached on an Error, then Collins smashed a two-run triple down the right-field line. Creighton center-fielder Parker Upton with an RBI ground out to third.
Saint Louis responded with three runs off the Bluejay bullpen to move back in front in the fifth. The Billiken lead was short lived as Creighton plated five runs on five hits and two Saint Louis errors in the sixth.With one down in the frame Creighton loaded the bags on three consecutive singles from Jake Holton, Jack Strunc and Jordan Hovey. Allbery reached on an error as he tied the game at 4-4 and kept the bags full. Creighton took a 5-4 lead via a wild pitch, then another mishandled ball off the bat of junior David Vilches made it 7-4. The Bluejays final run of the frame came on an RBI single from junior Parker Upton, to plate Vilches.
Creighton added an insurance run in the eighth on a single from Vilches and an RBI double from Hanafan.
Junior Jonah Smith collected the win (2-0), getting the final two outs of the fifth inning, while Saint Louis starter Luke Matheny took the loss (0-2). Matheny allowed six runs (one earned) on six hits in 5.1 innings.
Collins, Strunc and Vilches each delivered two hits in the game, while Collins and Upton each had a pair of RBI.
Creighton is back in action on Friday, March 15 as the Bluejays begin a three-game series with the Evansville Aces. First pitch for game one of the series is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
