Softball Scores 12 Runs In One Inning, Splits Doubleheader Against Georgetown

Bluejays scored 12 runs in the top of the 6th of the first game against Hoyas
The Bluejays moved to 10-10 overall and 1-1 in league play, while the Hoyas advanced their record to 8-22 (1-1 BIG EAST).Â
Creighton trailed 4-2 after five innings in the first game before scoring 12 runs during the sixth inning, including 11 with two outs.
Kiara Mills started the scoring with a bases loaded sacrifice fly to center field for the second out of the inning. Mikaela Pechar tied the game at 4-4 by reaching on an error by the first baseman as Ashley Cantu scored from third base without a play. Sam Alm delivered a bases-loaded walk to send home the Bluejays' third run of inning and Creighton gained a 5-4 edge.
Kaitlynn Hunt, Courtney Sandell and Ashley Cantu each recorded RBI singles to make it 8-4 before Creighton hit three consecutive home runs. Jayci Foster started the homer parade with a grand slam to center and Mileah McKelvy and Mills extended the Bluejays' edge to 10 runs, 14-4, with solo homers.
The 12 runs were the most Creighton recorded in a single inning since the Bluejays' tallied 13 runs in the bottom of the first inning against North Dakota State on April 5, 2010. Creighton recorded 11 runs against Villanova last season (May 5, 2018).
The Bluejays' also hit three consecutive home runs for the first time since March 22, 2014 (also in the top of the 6th) against Butler.
A Georgetown solo home run in the bottom of the sixth cut the final deficit to nine runs.
The Hoyas gained an early 1-0 lead in the first frame with two walks and a RBI ground out.Â
Creighton left two on base during the first and the bases loaded in the second before breaking into the scoring column in the third. Kelli Finan doubled home Millls all the way from first base to tie the game at 1-1.
Georgetown took a 2-1 edge in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run, but the Bluejays countered as Mills tied the game at 2-2 with a home run to center field in the top of the fifth, the first of long ball of her career.Â
The Hoyas regained a 4-2 lead with a RBI double and run-scoring error in the bottom of the fifth before Creighton's 12-run sixth.Â
Mills led the Bluejays offense by going 2-for-2 with two home runs, three RBIs, three runs scored and two walks, while Cantu and Hunt each went 2-for-3 and Foster drove in four with her grand slam.Â
McKelvy drove in Creighton's first run of the second game with a single to left field in the top of the third.
Georgetown tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth with Sarah Bennett's third home run of the day.Â
The Bluejays quickly regained the lead in the top of the fifth. Sydney Jenkins walked to lead off the inning and stole second before Finan tallied a RBI single up the middle.Â
Victoria Alvarez extended the Creighton lead with a double to left to drive in Finan from first base.Â
The Bluejays added one in the top of the sixth before Georgetown scored four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 5-4 lead.
Finan tied the game at 5-5 with a solo home run to start the top of the seventh.
The Hoyas used a single, sacrifice bunt and RBI single to end the game with only one out in the last of the seventh.Â
Alvarez paced the Bluejay offense in the second game by going 3-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI. McKelvy and Finan each tallied two hits and two RBIs.Â
Creighton and Georgetown will conclude their three-game weekend series with a single game on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. Central.
