Bluejays and Friars played 12 innings during the first game of the double dip
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Creighton softball team dropped both games during a BIG EAST doubleheader against Providence on Saturday at Glay Field in Providence, Rhode Island. The Friars won 4-3 in 12 innings during the first game and 5-3 during the second game with a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the seventh.Â
The Bluejays moved to 1-4 in league play and 11-13 overall, while the Friars improved to 3-2 during BIG EAST action and 19-12 overall with the pair of walk-off victories.
Creighton forced extra innings in the first game of the doubleheader with a pinch-hit home run by Kailey Wilson with two outs in the top of the seventh. Wilson worked a full count before lifting the ball over the right-center field wall for her first collegiate home run to tie the game at 3-3.Â
Providence walked-off with a victory in the bottom of the 12th with a pair of infield singles and an error. The game ended with an error on a ball hit toward the second base position. A deflection sent the ball into shallow right field and allowed a Friar to score from second base.
The Bluejays opened the scoring on Saturday with a solo home run by Mikaela Pechar in the top of the second inning. The junior catcher recorded her second homer of the season to give Creighton an early 1-0 edge.
Pechar's solo shot came moments after the Bluejay defense recorded the final out of the first inning at home plate. Ashley Cantu fired the ball towards home after a single up the middle and Pechar applied the tag on Emma Lee for the third out of the frame.
Providence quickly countered the Creighton's solo home run and tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second with a RBI single to right field.
Creighton gained its second lead of the game with a double in the top of the fourth from Sam Alm. Alm hit the ball down the left-field and pinch-runner Kaitlynn Hunt scored all the way from first base as the Bluejays took a 2-1 advantage.
The host Friars tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the fifth and took a 4-3 lead with a second sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Eight different Bluejays recorded exactly one hit during the first game.
Laura Roecker pitched 7.2 innings of relief and posted five consecutive scoreless innings before Providence scratched across the game-winning run in the bottom of the 12th. She allowed six hits, walked one and recorded one strikeout during her team-leading ninth relief appearance.Â
The 12-inning game marked Creighton's longest game by innings since the Bluejays played 16 innings against Villanova on April 5, 2014 in Omaha.Â
Providence took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the second game with a hit and three free passes. Creighton freshman Kate Mulllally, making her first collegiate start in the circle, allowed the first three Friars to reach base and forced in a run by hitting the fifth batter of the inning. Mullally escaped further damage and left the bases loaded by inducing a fielder's choice and foul out to end the first inning.
Creighton tied the game in the top of the third. Alm singled past the Providence shortstop and Sydney Jenkins scored the first Bluejay run of the second game.Â
Mileah McKelvy led off the top of the fourth frame with a home run and gave Creighton a 2-1 lead. The junior's fourth homer of the season sailed over the wall in left-center field.Â
Mullally escaped a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the fourth to preserve the Bluejays' slim lead. Hunt did not have to move from her drawn in shortstop position to haul in a line drive to end the threat as the Friars left the bases loaded for the second time.Â
Creighton added a run in the top of the seventh inning. Wilson led off the inning with a triple down the left-field line and pinch-runner Victoria Alvarez scored on an infield single by Cantu.Â
Providence loaded the bases two singles and a walk before Jessica Tomoso lifted a 2-2 offering over the left-field wall to promptly unload the bases for the walk-off victory.
Wilson and Kelli Finan led the Creighton offense in the second game as each finished 2-for-3.Â
Mullally struck out two batters and allowed six hits during her first complete-game effort.Â
The Bluejays and Friars conclude their weekend series with a single game on Sunday at 10 a.m. Central.Â
