OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's tennis team earned a 4-3 victory against Villanova on Friday afternoon at the Hanscom Tennis Center during the final weekend of the regular season.
The Bluejays improved to 8-11 this spring, including 2-3 against BIG EAST competition, while the Wildcats fell to 10-9 overall and 3-3 in matches against league foes.
Erin Epperson's three-set win at the No. 4 singles position clinched the match. The sophomore won the first set 6-4 but fell 6-2 in the second frame. In the deciding set, Epperson earned a 6-3 victory for the Bluejays' fourth singles victory.
Seniors Ashley Ishimura (No. 1), Michaela Henne (No. 3) and Claire Embree (No. 6) each won in straight-sets. Ishimura won 6-0, 6-2, Henne earned a 6-2, 7-5 victory and Embree secured a 6-4, 6-1 win.
Villanova won in straight-sets at the No. 2 and 5 positions.
Creighton started doubles play with a commanding 6-1 victory at the top position by the duo of Ishimura and Sarah Wilcox, before the Wildcats clinched the doubles point with tiebreaker victories at each of the other two slots.
"This was a very tough match and both teams competed well," head coach Tom Lilly said. "We weren't able to capitalize in doubles and just didn't play to the level we needed to at two and three.
"It was great to see our three seniors come through in singles on their final home weekend, and Erin had to play very well at times to clinch and get us the win."
Creighton concludes the regular season on Sunday against DePaul. The Bluejays and Blue Demons will meet at 11 a.m. on Sunday at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
