Big Inning Lifts Baseball in Doubleheader Opener, 7-5

Indianapolis, Ind. -- Junior Will Robertson gave Creighton and early 1-0 lead with a solo home in the first and the Bluejays plated five runs in the fifth as the Bluejays took the opening game of a doubleheader from Butler, 7-5, on Saturday, April 13.
The win moved the Bluejays to 19-7 on the season and 2-0 in BIG EAST play, while Butler fell to 17-15 overall and 1-4 in conference action.
Robertson's launched his sixth homer of the season to right on the first pitch he saw in the opening frame. His blast held up until Butler pulled even with a run in the fourth on an RBI ground out from Connor Christman.
Creighton's offense answered quickly in the fifth, plating five runs on three hits, two walks and hit batter. Sophomore Will Hanafan opened the firth with a single up the middle, then walks to junior Isaac Collins and Will Robertson loaded the bags. Junior Jake Holton gave Creighton a 2-1 lead as he was hit by a pitch. Senior Jack Strunc followed with a sac fly to left, then senior Jordan Hovey pulled a two-run double down the right field line to make it 5-1. Fresham Jared Wegner pushed the Creighton advantage to 6-1 with an RBI single to center.
Butler responded with four runs on a walk, two Bluejay errors and a double in the sixth, but Creighton got one back in the seventh on a walk to Holton, a double from Strunc and a sac fly by Hovey.
Reliever John Sakowski closed the door with two innings of nearly flawless ball, allowing one hit and facing just seven Butler hitters in the eighth and ninth.
Creighton starter Denson Hull earned his second win of the week (2-3), allowing just two runs on three hits and three walks in five innings.
Butler starter Sam Hubbe took the loss (3-2), giving up five runs on five hits and four walks in four innings.
At the dish Hovey finished 1-for-3 with three RBI, while Robertson, Strunc and Hanafan each collected two hits in the contest.
The two squads are currently playing the final game of the series.
