Women's Tennis Advances To Quarterfinals Of BIG EAST Championships With Sweep Of Providence

CAYCE, S.C. -- The No. 7 Creighton women's tennis team swept 10th-seeded Providence, 4-0, on Thursday morning during the first round of the 2019 BIG EAST Tennis Championships at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center in Cayce, South Carolina.
The Bluejays improved to 9-12 overall and advanced to Friday's quarterfinals for a match against second-seeded DePaul at 11:30 a.m. Central.
Creighton opened play by winning at the top two doubles positions. Ashley Ishimura and Sarah Wilcox combined for a 6-0 win at the top slot, while Erin Epperson and Gabby O'Connor won 6-1 at No. 2.
The Bluejays clinched the dual with three straight-sets singles victories. Michaela Henne claimed a 6-2, 6-0 win the No. 3 position before Ishimura won 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot. O'Connor's 6-0, 6-2 victory at the No. 6 slot secured the match. In addition to the three match victories, Wilcox, Epperson, and Claire Embree each earned first-set wins before play ended.
"We played very well today," head coach Tom Lilly said. "Our girls came to compete and started off strong at nearly every match. We will look to play confident, strong tennis against DePaul and put ourselves in positions to win."
Friday's quarterfinal contest will be the second of the week between the Bluejays and Blue Demons. DePaul earned a 6-1 win against Creighton on Sunday in Omaha.
