Senior improves to 5-1 with seven shutout innings
OMAHA, Neb. -- Mitch Ragan threw seven innings of shutout ball to help Creighton Baseball to a 4-0 win over Kansas State on Friday, April 5.
The victory pushed hte Bluejays to 15-6 on the season, while Kansas State fell to 12-19 overall.
Creighton got all the offense it would need in the third inning against K-State ace Griffin Hassall, scoring four times against the talented freshman who entered the night having allowed just four earned runs in his first 19.1 innings as a collegian. The Bluejay rally began in with one down in the frame as catcher David Vilches slapped a single through the left side. Will Hanafan walked, then Isaac Collins lifted a single to right field to load the bases. Creighton pushed across the first run of the game when Parker Upton was hit by a pitch, then Will Robertson laced a two-run double down the left field line to make it 3-0. Before the frame closed the Bluejays got another RBI as Jack Strunc was hit by a pitch with the bags full.
Staked to a 4-0 lead, Creighton's senior ace Ragan retired nine of ten Wildcats hitters to quickly move the game to the seventh. In his final frame, Ragan worked around a single and an error in the infield to keep Kansas State scoreless.
Reliever John Sakowski remained strong out of the bullpen with two scoreless frames to preserve the shutout.
Ragan moved to 5-1 on the season with the win, allowing three hits and punching out nine Wildcats in seven innings of work.
Hassall allowed four runs on four hits, three walks and four hit batters in 6.2 frames.
Both squads closed the game with five hits. Five Bluejays recorded one hit, while Kansas State got a two-hit game from Terrence Spurlin.
The Bluejays and Wildcats resume the series on Saturday at 2 p.m.
