Omaha, Neb. -- Facing its toughest opponent thus far, the Creighton women's soccer team was impressive in a 1-0 loss to (RV) Clemson on Sunday, Sept. 1.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 2-1-0 on the season, while Clemson moved to 4-0-0 with its fourth consecutive shutout.
Throughout the first half each team had chances, but Clemson's best opportunity was denied by senior Ashleigh Cearlock. The Illinois native raced behind Creighton sophomore goalkeeper Katie Sullivan in the 27th minute to save a shot from Clemson's Renee Guion.
The Bluejays fired a pair of shots on frame midway through the period by Clemson keeper Hannah McLaughlin denied by senior Taryn Jakubowski and sophomore Ansley Atkinson.
With the score tied 0-0 heading into halftime, Clemson came out firing on all cylinders. In the 52nd minute of the match, a long entry pass from Mackenzie Smith gave Mariana Speckmaier a one-on-one opportunity with Sullivan. Smith slid a shot to the right of Sullivan and into the back of the net, to put Clemson up 1-0.
Creighton best opportunity to score came in the 72nd minute when Atkinson blasted a free kick from five yards outside the goal box. Atkinson's ball struck two defenders and found its way to senior Lauren Harkes for a shot from eight yards. The Clemson transfer beat the Tigers keeper, but her former teammate Mackenzie Smith denied Harkes chance to equalize the game.
Sullivan collected eight saves on the day, while Clemson had a total of five. The Bluejays were out shot 17-8 in the match with five of the eight being shots on goal.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 6 as the Bluejays host Iowa State at 4:30 pm in the first match of a Bluejay doubleheader for Socctoberfest.
