Arena records fall in high-scoring contest
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton freshman Emma Ronsiek had her first career double-double with 28 points and 10 rebounds while senior Tatum Rembao set a D.J. Sokol Arena record with 14 assists but it wasn't enough as No. 18 DePaul outscored the host Bluejays 30-18 in the fourth quarter to escape with a 90-81 road win on Tuesday, Dec. 22.
DePaul (5-2, 2-0 BIG EAST) set an arena record with 38 field goals made as well as establishing an arena record by an opponent for field goal percentage (.603) as Creighton fell to 2-6 (1-3 BIG EAST).
Creighton led for much of the first quarter, including a 22-17 edge, before DePaul embarked on a 9-0 run with a trio of three-pointers in a 78-second span. The Blue Demons owned a 26-24 lead after the first 10 minutes.
Creighton used an 11-0 run late in the second period to move ahead 41-34 for its largest advantage of the contest, and was ahead 45-41 at the half.
The Bluejays maintained an edge after three quarters, 63-60, only to see the Blue Demons open the fourth period with first 10 points as part of a 19-3 run. DePaul never trailed again.
Ronsiek's final points of the night brought CU within four points at 80-76 with just over three minutes to go, but a Lexi Held jumper and a three-ball by Kendall Holmes helped DePaul dash CU's comeback hopes.
Ronsiek led CU with 15 points and six rebounds at the break, making 7-of-8 shots, while Rembao dished six assists. Also providing a spark was junior Payton Brotzki, who connected on all three of her shots to score a season-high eight points prior to intermission. Creighton got 46 points from its talented freshman class.
DePaul had six women score in double-figures, paced by 22 from Sonya Morris. Morris also added eight assists and six rebounds. DePaul made 14-of-16 shots in the fourth quarter, including 12-of-12 from two-point range. The Blue Demons turned Creighton over a season-high 19 times, converting those into a 21-10 advantage in points off turnovers.
Creighton was led by 28 points and 10 rebounds from Ronsiek, who converted on 13-of-15 field goal attempts. Fellow freshman Morgan Maly had 13 points in 16 minutes, and Temi Carda and Brotzki each chipped in with 10 points. The Bluejay bench had a 27-17 advantage in bench points and a 46-44 lead in paint points.
Rembao finished with 14 assists and nine points while directing a Bluejay offense that shot 52.3 percent (34-65) and drained 11-of-23 three-point tries. Rembao's 14 assists were one shy of the school-record set by Becky Strathman in 1992, and the most by a Bluejay since Melissa Sanford had 14 assists vs. Wyoming on March 7, 1992. Her 14 helpers were also the most by any BIG EAST player since Notre Dame All-American Skylar Diggins had 14 vs. Saint Francis (Pa.) on Dec. 31, 2012.
Creighton will take a holiday break until returning to BIG EAST play when it visits Xavier on Sunday, January 3rd at 1 p.m. Central.
