Softball Run-Rules Cleveland State, Drops One-Run Game Against Nationally-Ranked Florida State

Bluejays defeat Vikings 8-0 after falling 2-1 against Seminoles
Longwood, Fla. -- The Creighton softball team run-ruled Cleveland State, 8-0, and fell 2-1 against nationally-ranked Florida State on Saturday at Boombah Soldiers Creek Park in Longwood, Florida.Â
The Bluejays moved their season record to 11-9.
Creighton opened Saturday by falling in a one-run game against No. 11 (ESPN/USA Softball Poll) Florida State.
The Bluejays took a 1-0 lead in the third inning against the Seminoles. Kiara Mills singled to lead off the frame before pinch-runner Jacey Sawyer advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a strikeout, lead-off hitter Ashley Cantu doubled into left-center field to drive in Sawyer for the first run of the game.Â
Creighton had a chance to extend its lead in the fifth. Cantu led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and wild pitch but did not score.Â
Kiele Miller shut out the Seminoles through the first five innings. The junior stranded a pair of runners in the second inning and single runners in both the first and fifth.
Florida State broke through in the sixth. The Seminoles recorded a two-out single before hitting a two-run homer over the left-center wall to take the lead, 2-1.
Sam Alm led off the top of the seventh by being hit by the pitch but did not advance past first base.
Miller struck out six and walked one while allowing five hits and two earned runs. Cantu led the offense with a 2-for-3 performance as the Bluejays were held to three hits.
After the one-run loss, Creighton bounced back for an 8-0 shutout of Cleveland State in only five innings.
The Bluejays scored two runs in the first and third innings before ending the game with four runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Mikaela Pechar opened the scoring with a two-RBI double in the opening frame. The senior sent a ball into left-center field that allowed both Cantu and Cayla Nielsen to cross home plate and gave Creighton a 2-0 edge.
The Bluejays continued to put pressure on the Vikings by loading the bases with no outs in the second, but Creighton failed to extend its advantage.
In the third, Pechar and Alm each singled to open inning before Kiara Mills drove in both runners with a double.Â
Mills produced her second two-RBI hit of the game during the fifth. The sophomore singled into right-center field to drive in Pechar and Alm as the Bluejays built a 6-0 lead. Pinch-runner Sydney Jenkins scored on a throwing error by the pitcher for the seventh Creighton run. With the bases loaded, Nielsen drew an eight-pitch walk to force home Victoria Alvarez from third base to end the game.
Mills finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs and Pechar went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Alm also went 2-for-3 and scored twice.
Mikayla Santa Cruz tallied two strikeouts and two walks while scattering five hits in five innings of work for her team-leading sixth victory.
Creighton returns to action on Sunday with a single game against the Longwood Lancers at Boombah Soldiers Creek Park on Sunday at 10:45 a.m.
