Ronsiek Powers Bluejay WBB Past SDSU, 67-55

Omaha, Neb. -- Sophomore Emma Ronsiek was a force in the paint, delivering a game-high 18 points, in Creighton women's basketball's 67-55 win over South Dakota State on Sunday, November 21.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 2-2 on the season, while the Jackrabbits fell to 2-3 overall.
Ronsiek put the Bluejays on the board in the opening frame with a traditional three-point play, taking a 3-2 lead (6:57). Down 4-3 as the second unit came on the floor, Creighton reserves lit a fire for the squad to begin an 11-0 run. Sophomore Mallory Brake immediately turned an offensive rebound into a layup, then added another driving layup to put the Bluejays up 7-4 (3:37). Sophomore Jayme Horan followed with a four-point play, converting a trifecta and the foul (1:41) to make it 11-4. Finally fellow sophomore Lauren Jensen capped the burst with a three-ball from the corner to put Creighton ahead 14-6 with 59 second remaining in quarter. The Jackrabbits hit the final bucket to close the frame at 14-8.
South Dakota State continued to chip away early in the second quarter, closing within five at 17-12 with 7:45 left in the half. Once more Brake got the Bluejays rolling with an offensive rebound and a layup. This time she started a 6-0 run, getting buckets by senior Tatum Rembao and sophomore Morgan Maly to push the Bluejay lead to 25-12 (4:03). The Jackrabbits crept back into striking distance by halftime, send the squads to the locker room with Creighton holding a 31-23 advantage.
Holding a 33-28 lead early in the third, the Bluejays took control of the contest with an 12-0 run. This time Maly got things started with a layup. Buckets from Jensen, senior Rachael Saunders and three-ball from sophomore Molly Mogensen extended the Creighton lead to 42-28 (3:48). A turn-around jumper from Maly and a free-throw by Mogensen pushed the lead to 45-28 (2:55).
Creighton's lead dipped to nine early in the fourth, but Ronsiek answered every charge by the Jackrabbits in the final frame. The South Dakota native dropped in 10 points in the fourth to secure the win.
Ronsiek's 18 led all scorers, while fellow sophomores Lauren Jenen and Morgan Maly finished with 13 and 11 points respectively.
South Dakota State got 15 points from freshman point guard Paige Meyer and 10 from Tylee Irwin in the loss.
Creighton returns to the court on Saturday, November 27 as the Bluejays host Northern Iowa at 1:00 pm.
