Omaha, Neb. -- Freshman Alan Roden provided the thump, launching a three-run blast in the seventh inning that nearly left TD Ameritrade Park Omaha itself, as the Creighton Baseball team defeated Bradley 6-4 on Saturday, March 27.
The win moved the Bluejays to 5-7 on the season, while the Braves fell to 5-8.
Trailing 4-3 with two outs in the seventh, sophomore Andrew Meggs and senior Parker Upton kept the inning alive with a single up the middle and a single to center, bringing Roden to the plate. On the third pitch of his at-bat, the Creighton designated hitter made the Braves pay for a change-up left belt high, blasting a ball to the final row of the stands in right.
Staked to a 6-4 lead the Bluejays turned to senior closer John Sakowski for the final six outs of the game. The Omaha native did not disappoint, needing just 32 pitches to notch his first save of the season.
Creighton jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Webel opened the frame with a walk, then Meggs laced a single right-center putting Bluejays on the corners. A sac fly from Upton made it 1-0, then Roden connected on an RBI double down the right field line.
Bradley answered with four runs in the third, taking advantage of an infield single, a throwing error and a double that was lost in the wind.
The Bluejays' third run of the game crossed in the fourth as junior Sterling Hayes smacked a leadoff double, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a sac fly from senior Ryan Mantle.
Creighton reliever Ryan Windham earned the win (1-0), allowing one hit and getting a lineout to end the Bradley seventh.
Braves' reliever Jed Moscot took the loss (2-1), allowing three runs on five hits in 4.2 innings out of the bullpen.
Roden and Meggs were the offensive stars for Creighton with three hits each, while Roden collected four RBI.
Creighton and Bradley will complete the shortened two-game series on Sunday, March 28 at 12:00 pm
