Kiara Mills hit a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to end the second game of the day
OMAHA, Neb. -- Kiara Mills launched a walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to help the Creighton softball team split a doubleheader against St. John's on Saturday afternoon at the Creighton Sports Complex. The Red Storm earned a 3-2 win in the first game of the day before the Bluejays claimed a 4-3 victory in the second contest.
Creighton moved its record to 7-4 in BIG EAST play and 11-8 overall, while St. John's sent its league mark to 5-8 and overall record to 8-12.
With the scored tied at 3-3, two outs and the bases empty in the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game, Mills fouled off the first pitch of her at bat. The Bluejay first baseman did not miss the second pitch she saw, lifting it over the left-center field wall for her third home run of the season to end the game.
After falling behind 1-0 to start the second game of the day, Ashley Cantu quickly tied the game with a lead-off homer in the home half of the first inning. The fifth-year senior sent a line drive towards right field that cleared the wall by only a few feet for her second home run of the season.
Creighton kept the game knotted at 1-1 with a strong defensive play to end the top of the second frame. St. John's hit a ball into the left-center field gap where Cayla Nielsen picked up the ball and tossed it to Victoria Alvarez in shallow left field. Alvarez turned and fired a strike to Mikaela Pechar at home plate who applied a tag on a Red Storm runner trying to score from first base on the play for the final out of the inning.
The Bluejays took the lead in the bottom of second inning with a pair of runs. Two singles and walk loaded the bases for Cantu's second at bat of the game. The Creighton lead-off hitter sent a ground ball to the second baseman who attempted to tag Brittney Manthie running from first to second base, but Manthie eluded the tag, which allowed Mikayla Paulson to cross home plate. Two batters later, Kailey Wilson drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in the third Creighton run.
St. John's cut its deficit to one with an RBI single in the third and tied the game at 3-3 with a solo home run to straight-away center field in the fifth.
Jena Lawrence entered the circle for the Bluejays with runners at first and second in the top of the fifth and struck out the first batter she faced and induced a ground out to end the inning. The Albia, Iowa native did not allow a base runner in the sixth and worked around a pair of singles in the seventh to set the stage for the walk-off victory. Lawrence recorded three strikeouts in relief and notched the first win of her Creighton career.
Cantu led the Bluejays three hits and two RBIs in game two, while Wilson walked three times as Creighton drew a season-high seven walks.
St. John's delivered the game-winning run in the first game of the day on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. After an RBI double tied the game at 1-1, the Red Storm scored a runner from second base on a sacrifice fly to center field to take the lead, 2-1. Kamryn Tiumalu sent a fly ball to deep center field with Amelia Ditolvo at second base. After Nielsen caught the ball for the second out of the inning, Ditolvo tagged up and headed for third before being waved home and beating a tag attempt at the plate.
