CHICAGO, Ill. --Â The Creighton softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against league-leader DePaul on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Demons earned a 6-0 shutout victory in game one before securing a 4-1 win in the second game.Â
The Bluejays moved their season record to 8-6 in BIG EAST play and 13-10 overall, while the Blue Demons improved to 9-1 in league play and 18-9 overall. Saturday marked the first time Creighton lost both games of a BIG EAST doubleheader this season.
DePaul scored three runs in the first inning to take early control during the first game of the doubleheader.
The Blue Demons used four hits to produce three runs before Creighton starting pitcher Parker Boyd stranded DePaul baserunners at each base to stop the bleeding.
The home team extended its lead to 4-0 with a solo home run in the bottom of the second.
Creighton loaded the bases in the top of the third with hopes of cutting into the DePaul lead. Cayla Nielsen hit a single into right field before Brittney Manthie and Ashley Cantu each recorded infield singles. A fly out to shallow right field and a strikeout kept the bases loaded without the Bluejays scoring a run.
Boyd sat down the Blue Demons in order in the third and stranded a pair of runners in the fourth before  Creighton ended up on the wrong side of DePaul's crafty fielding in the top of the fifth frame. Nielsen sent a fly ball to deep right-center field where the Blue Demon outfielder caught the ball with her back against the fence and Manthie was out by less than a step on a ground ball to second base.
DePaul put two on but did not score in the last of the fifth before adding a pair of insurance runs in the sixth.
Mikaela Pechar led off the top of the seventh with a single into right field, but a strikeout and double play line out ended the game.Â
Six different Bluejays recorded a hit, while Boyd pitched the complete game and struck out eight while stranding nine baserunners in game one.Â
DePaul hit a pair of home runs and a two-out double to produce four runs in the second game.Â
The Blue Demons hit a two-run blast in the third and a solo shot in the fourth to build a 3-0 lead.
Victoria Alvarez missed a two-run homer in the top of the fifth by a matter of inches. The junior shortstop lifted the ball down the left-field line where it sailed over the fence, but the umpires ruled that the ball to crossed over the fence on the foul side of the left-field foul pole.
Alvarez went down swinging on the next pitch and the Bluejays left runners at the corners to end the half inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Mikayla Santa Cruz's first delivery came back to the circle and struck her in the torso. She recovered the ball and recorded an out by tossing the ball to first base. The sophomore took some time to catch her breath and take a few warm-up pitches before staying in the game and retiring DePaul in order during the last of the fifth.
Creighton scored its first run of the game during the sixth. Cantu singled and Kailey Wilson doubled before Madeline Vejvoda produced a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Cantu and make it a 3-1 game.Â
The Blue Demons responded with a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to add cushion to their lead.Â
The Bluejays went down in order during the top of the seventh inning to end the game.
Creighton managed only three hits in the second game, while Santa Cruz pitched the complete game.Â
Creighton and DePaul will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday at noon.
