OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton softball team fell to UNO, 3-2, in 10 innings on Wednesday at the Mavericks' home facility, Connie Claussen Field.
The Bluejays dropped their season record to 13-12, while the Mavericks improved to 10-23.
Wednesday marked Creighton's first extra inning contest since April 23, 2019 at South Dakota State (8-7 loss).
Creighton put one on in the top of the 10th inning but did not score before UNO put a runner at third with only one out in the last of the frame. Allison Helton lifted a fly ball to the deepest part of center field where Cayla Nielsen caught the ball to record the second out of the inning, but Emily Klosterman scored easily from third base to end the game.
UNO started the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first. The Mavericks loaded the bases with two walks and a single before producing an RBI single to the deep part of the infield between third base and the short stop position.
Creighton responded with one run in the second frame without recording a hit. Kiara Mills led off the inning by being hit by the pitch and Madeline Vejvoda walked to put runners at first and second. A strikeout and fly out put the Bluejays one out away from failing to score, but Mikayla Paulson drew a walk to load the bases before Cayla Nielsen drove in a run with a full-count walk.Â
Creighton starting pitcher Mikayla Santa Cruz worked around a one-out double and two-out walk in the second to keep the game tied. The sophomore induced a line out to Vejvoda at the short stop position to strand a pair of UNO runners.
The Bluejays took the lead in the third. Kailey Wilson launched her team-leading eighth home run well over the right-field wall and over the Creighton bullpen to push the Bluejays ahead 2-1.
Santa Cruz allowed a pair of singles to open the third inning before two strikeouts and a fielder's choice ground out to third base ended the frame.
Creighton left a pair of runners on base in the top of the fourth, while the Mavericks pushed across their second run of the game in the bottom half of the inning and tied the contest at 2-2.
Both teams put up zeros in the fifth through seventh frames to force extra innings.Â
UNO put runners at first and second with one out in the bottom of the eighth. Creighton called Parker Boyd out of the bullpen to help the Bluejays escape the threat. The senior promptly recorded the final two outs without allowing an additional base runner and ended the frame with a strikeout.Â
The Mavericks threatened again in the bottom of the ninth and loaded the bases with no outs. Boyd forced a fly out to left field for the first out of the inning and the runner at third base did not try to score. Vejvoda recorded the second and third outs of the inning by catching a pair of pop ups to the left side of the diamond.Â
Creighton and UNO combined to walk 14 times (seven each) during Wednesday's 10-inning tilt, while the Mavericks' pitchers recorded 14 strikeouts and Bluejay pitching had five. UNO ended the contest with a total of 15 left on base.Â
Paulson made her first collegiate start on Wednesday and recorded her first hit as a Bluejay during the top of the fourth inning -- one of Creighton's three hits during the 10-inning contest. She also finished with four putouts and three assists on defense while playing second base.
The loss extended the Bluejays' losing streak to four games.
Creighton will return to the Creighton Sports Complex next week for a contest against South Dakota on April 28.
