Baseball Closes Regular Season with 3-2 Win Over Xavier

Omaha, Neb. -- Creighton Baseball wrapped up the regular season with a 3-2 victory over Xavier on Saturday, May 22.
The win pushed the Bluejays to 23-13 on the season and 15-6 in BIG EAST play, while Xavier fell to 25-24 overall and 15-11 in conference action.
The victory clinched the No. 2 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament for the Bluejays, while Xavier settled for the No. 4 seed.
The Bluejays got on the board first in the bottom of the third as junior Will Hanafan used his speed to put Creighton up 1-0. The Iowa native drew a leadoff walk, then went from first to third on a sacrifice bunt by Nolan Clifford. Hanafan alertly noticed that Xavier third baseman Sam Olsen left the bag unattended to field the bunt. As Hanafan took third, Musketeer first baseman Luke Franconi's throw to third got away, allowing Hanafan to score.
Xavier knotted the game at 1-1 in the fourth and took the lead (2-1) in the fifth.
Creighton quickly answered with as junior David Vilches opened the frame with a leadoff double, moved to third via a sacrific bunt and scored on an RBI single from freshman Nolan Clifford.
The Bluejays took the lead for good in the bottom of the eight getting a one-out single from sophomore Andrew Meggs, an intentional walk to freshman Alan Roden, a hit batter and an RBI single by sophomore Sterling Hayes.
Senior John Sakowski closed out the game to claim the win (2-3), tossing 2.1 innings of scoreless ball.
Xavier reliever Jack Lynch took the loss (0-2), allowing one run on one hit and two walks in 1.1 innings.
Creighton will play No. 3 Seton Hall in the opening game of the BIG EAST Tournament on Thursday, May 27th at 1:30 pm (CT).
