Bluejays Deliver Dramatic Win in the Final Minute of Double Overtime, 2-1
8/19/2021 11:17:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Omaha, Neb. -- Knotted at 1-1 with under a minute remaining in double overtime, freshmen Hailey Rothwell and Maddie Radke lifted the Creighton Women's Soccer team to a 2-1 win over Montana in the 2021 season opening match on Thursday, August 19.
The win moved the Bluejays to 1-0-0 on the season, while Montana fell to 0-1-0.
A well played first half by both squads resulted in a scoreless tie. Creighton out shot Montana 5-2 in the opening frame, but the hbest scoring chance came on the opening shot as the Grizzlies were denied by sophomore Keelan Terrell in the ninth minute of play.
The Bluejays took the lead in the 50th minute as freshman Abigail Santana redirected a pass from junior Ansley Atkinson just in front of the net. Santana's shot trickled past Montana goalkeeper Camellia Xu slipping off her hand and just inside the right post.
Creighton held its advantage until the 80th minute when Montana's Josie Windauer slipped the equalizer into the back of the net after Terrell committed to stopping a shot from Taylor Stoeger.
Moving into the second overtime the August heat and humidity of the midwest got to both teams as cramping was an issue for each squad. In the 103rd minute the match got an extended break as Creighton sophomore Aida Kardovic was issued a yellow card. Bluejay assistant coach Lisa-Marie Woods took exception to the call, earning a yellow and subsequently a red card of her own.
The extra few minutes of rest helped Creighton as the Bluejays fired off all six shots in the overtime sessions. The game-winning goal came with just 46 seconds remaining in the match as Radke lifted a ball to the back post as Rothwell made a run. Creighton's freshman connection delivered the game winner as Rothwell headed a looping shot into the back of the net in her first match as a Bluejay.
Creighton closed the contest with a 19-7 edge on shots, while each team earned four corner kicks.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Sunday, Aug. 22 as the Bluejays battle Drake at 1:00 pm in Morrison Stadium.
