Paul Kruse posted eight saves during the loss
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's soccer team fell to Tulsa, 2-1, during the season-opener for both programs on Thursday night at Morrison Stadium.Â
Bluejay senior goalkeeper Paul Kruse made eight saves -- one shy of his career-high for a single contest -- but the Golden Hurricane found the back of the net during the 77th and 83rd minutes on their final two shots of the night.Â
Â
Creighton freshman Manu Toledano converted his first career goal as a Bluejay during the 89th minute on a penalty kick to trim the final margin to a single goal. Senior Diego Gutierrez cut down the right edge of the 18-yard box before drawing a foul near the end line to set up the penalty with just over a minute remaining on the second-half clock.Â
Tulsa's first goal came off a corner kick. The Golden Hurricane sent the pass from the corner towards the near post where Mariano Fazio converted a low volley through the legs of Kruse. Alex Meinhard added to the visitor's lead by intercepting a pass inside Creighton's defensive zone just six minutes after the first tally.
Neither team found the back of the net during the first 45 minutes. Kruse made four first-half saves and Musa Qongo stopped the ball from passing over the line in the 27th minute for a team save as Tulsa applied pressure on the Creighton defense throughout the opening half.Â
The Bluejays had one shot on goal before halftime as Duncan McGuire launched the ball towards the bottom right corner of the net in the 34th minute.Â
Creighton nearly took a 1-0 lead during the 55th minute, but an offside call squandered a shot attempt from Mark O'Neill at the back post.Â
Tulsa held an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal overall during the match. The Golden Hurricane also had 10 corner kicks, while the Bluejays had six.
Creighton hits the road for a quick turnaround with a match on Sunday afternoon against Saint Louis. Kickoff between the Bluejays and Billikens is set for 3 p.m. in the Gateway City.Â
