Bluejay Women's Hoops Meets Red Storm for First Time in Two Seasons on Sunday

Omaha, Neb. -- For the first time since the final game of the 2019-20 season, the Bluejay women's basketball team faces off with St. John's on Sunday, Jan. 16 at 1:00 pm. The last time the two sides met was in the BIG EAST Tournament, just before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic brought a premature end to the basketball season.

Scouting St. John's (5-9, 1-3 BIG EAST)
Playing just its second game of 2022 due to a Covid pause, St. John's scored a season-low 49 points in a 56-49 loss at Providence on Friday.
Despite the showing at Providence, the Red Storm come to Omaha averaging 73.4 points per game. Leading the way for the St. John's offense is Leilani Correa with 20.1 ppg. Two other Red Storm players average double figures with Kadaja Bailey at 14.2 and Rayven Peeples at 12.8.
While the Red Storm can score almost at will, they are allowing 73.2 ppg. St. John's has been lost the battle of the boards by 4.5 rpg. In addition the Red Storm have committed 208 turnovers (14.9 per game).
Scouting Creighton (11-4, 6-1 BE)
The Bluejays have gotten off to a hot start this season in part by Creighton's ability to be a chameleon. The Bluejays proven adept at winning in different ways, whether that be pounding the ball in the paint or connecting from long range.
Against Seton Hall the Bluejays hammered the ball inside to the tune of 48 points in the paint. Yet five times this season the Bluejays have connected from long range at least 10 times, including three games with 14 treys.
Sophomore Emma Ronsiek was special in the win over Seton Hall, scoring a season-high 27 points to raise her team leading average to 13.3 ppg. Fellow sophomores Morgan Maly (11.3 ppg) and Lauren Jensen (10.8 ppg) are also averaging double digits.
Defensively the Bluejays have been successful at gang rebounding and creating more pressure on the ball this season. The Bluejays are averaging 36.6 rebounds and 15.1 turnovers per contest.
Another particular of strength for Creighton this season has been its depth. The Bluejay bench has outscored the opposing bench in 11 contests, building an edge of 151 points.

Players to Watch for Creighton
Sophomore Emma Ronsiek turned her scoring dial to high for the meeting with Seton Hall on Jan. 14. Ronsiek scored 19 points in the first half, finishing with a season-high 27 points. Consider that in the previous four games she had 26 points combined. Emma closed the battle with Seton Hall 12-for-16 from the field.
Jensen went for the Trifecta in the Third
Against Seton Hall Lauren Jensen was lethal in the third quarter against Seton Hall on Jan. 14. The Minnesota native connected on all three of her shots from beyond the arc, getting nine of her 14 points in the frame.
Six of Rembao's 11 Helpers Found Ronsiek
Senior Tatum Rembao dished out a season-high 11 assists in the Bluejays' 83-60 win over Seton Hall on Jan. 14. The Colorado native found Emma Ronsiek six times in the contest, including four in the first quarter alone.
Bench Powers Beautiful Start Against Pirates
Knotted at 10-10 with the Pirates with 5:22 left in the opening quarter, the Creighton bench powered a 14-0 run to give control to the Bluejays. Ronsiek started the surge with a pair of free throws, yet the tandem of sophomores Molly Mogensen and Mallory Brake scored the ensuing 10 points on layups.

Keys To the Game on Sunday, Jan. 16
- Handling Pressure: Similar to Seton Hall, the Red Storm will try to speed up the Bluejays and force live ball turnovers.
- Rebounding: One area the Red Storm have struggled is cleaning the glass. Creighton must create additional opportunities with hustle.
- Creating Transition Points: While St. John's wants to cause turnovers, the Red Storm are also susceptible as well. At Providence the Red Storm were outscored 14-6 off turnovers.
Players to Watch for Creighton
- Carly Bachelor and Morgan Maly: Coming off a 27-point performance by Ronsiek against the Pirates, expect St. John's to make her a focus. This will create opportunities for Bachelor on the interior. Maly was held without a trey for just the second time in her career against Seton Hall.
