Softball Posts Pair Of Wins To Open Cardinal Classic

Bluejay improve to 5-2 on the year with a pair of wins
Beaumont, Texas – The Creighton softball team earned a pair of victories on Friday at the Cardinal Classic in Beaumont, Texas. The Bluejays recorded an 8-2 win over Ohio before claiming an 8-7 win over Lamar.
The Bluejays improves to 5-2 on the year.
In the first game, junior Mikayla Santa Cruz recorded her third complete game of the season while striking out seven and allowing just two earned runs.
Saren Croker led the Bluejays offensively with three hits, while Emma Rosonke drove in four runs as seven different Bluejays recorded at least a hit for the third straight game.
Creighton and Ohio each went scoreless in the first before the Bluejays scored two in the second and third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth.
Creighton made the first dent on the scoreboard in the top half of the second inning. Alyssa Gappa worked a walk before Croker singled to left field. Rosonke then opened the scoring with a two-run double deep into the left centerfield gap, giving the jays a 2-0 lead.
The Bobcats led off the bottom half of the second with a double and later scored on a walk to cut the Bluejays lead in half at 2-1.
The Jays added two more in the third as junior Kailey Wilson singled to lead off the inning before pinch-runner Sydra Seville advanced to third on a single from Sam Alm. Junior Kiara Mills then cracked a single into the left centerfield gap to extend the Jays lead out to 3-1.
The Bluejays were not done there as Croker recorded her second hit of the morning, pushing Alm across the plate to give Creighton a 4-1 advantage.
Alm pushed another Bluejay run across in the fourth inning. Sophomore Cayla Nielsen singled to right field to put things in motion. Nielsen advanced to second as Wilson drew a walk before stealing third and scoring on Alm's second sacrifice fly of the season to extend the Jays lead out to 5-1.
The Bobcats once again answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of singles and a pair of stolen bases to close the gap to 5-2.
It was not enough as Creighton added another three runs in the fifth to take an 8-2 lead. Gappa doubled into the deep left centerfield gap to lead off the inning. Croker then laced her third hit of the morning into centerfield allowing Gappa to advance to third before scoring on an error by the centerfielder. The Jays added another two runs as Rosonke hit her second home run of the season.
In game two, the Jays used a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to claim an 8-7 win over Lamar.
Creighton scored once in the first, third and fourth before exploding for three in the fifth and two runs in the top of the seventh. Lamar put three up on the board in both the fourth and fifth and one more in the fifth.
The Jays opened the afternoon contest with a run in the top of the first as Mills lined one back up the middle, allowing Nielsen to score from second after reaching on a fielder's choice.
Creighton added single runs in the third and fourth on a RBI fielder's choice by Gappa and a double by Nielsen in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead.
Lamar evened the score up by plating three in the bottom half of the fourth on three hits including two doubles by the Cardinals.
Creighton immediately responded with three runs of their own in the top of the fifth all with two outs. Croker took first on a hit by pitch before pinch runner Sydra Seville scored on a double to left center by Rosonke. Vejvoda extended the Jays lead once again with a single to right field, scoring Rosonke. Ryann Glenn then stepped in as a pinch-hitter and drove Vejvoda in with a double to the left field wall.
The Cardinals answered with three runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning to once again even the score up. Lamar took their first lead of the afternoon at 7-6 on a single up the middle from Kay Ancelot.
Madeline Vejvoda led off the top of the seventh inning with an eight-pitch walk before Brittney Manthie laid down a bunt single to put runners on first and second. A groundout by Nielsen moved Megan Miklesh and Manthie over to second and third as Wilson entered the box. Wilson did her job and drove Miklesh in and Manthie over to third on a groundout to second to even the score at 7-all. Alm was hit by a pitch before Manthie gave the Jays the lead by scoring on a wild pitch.
Freshman Alexis Wiggins then closed the door Lamar after the Cardinals put runners on second and third with only one out. The Nebraska native got out of the jam and ended the game with a ground ball to Gappa.
Mills went 2-for-4 in the game with an RBI and a walk, while Wilson drove in two to lead the Jays offensively.
Jena Lawrence earned her first win of the season after striking out three over 1.2 innings of work. Alexis Wiggins also threw 4.2 innings while striking out three and allowing just four total hits.
Creighton returns to the field tomorrow afternoon when they meet Ohio at 4 p.m. at the LU Softball Complex.
