Softball Swept in Doubleheader With South Dakota State

OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against South Dakota State on Sunday afternoon in the Bluejays home opener. The Jackrabbits run-ruled the Bluejays in game one, 18-0 in five-innings, before notching a 8-0 five-innings win in game two.
Creighton moved its season record to 7-5, while South Dakota State improved to 8-4.
The Jackrabbits led 3-0 after the top of the first inning in game one. Cylie Halvorson put the visiting Jackrabbits on the board with a two-run home run over the right centerfield wall, before Kelsey Lenox belted a solo home run over right field wall.
The Bluejays held South Dakota State scoreless in the second, but the Jackrabbits exploded for 12-runs in the third on six singles and a pair of home runs from Halvorson, her second of the game, and Allison Yoder to push their advantage out to 15-0.
South Dakota State would tack on three more runs in the top of the fourth on a pair of singles to extend the lead out to 18-0 after four innings of play.
Bluejay starter Mikayla Santa Cruz was tagged with the loss (4-3), while South Dakota State starter Glanzer Grace picked up the win (2-3 with three innings of three hits ball.
Sophomore's Emma Rosonke and Madeline Vejvoda each closed game one by going 2-for-2 at the plate.
In game two, the Jackrabbits jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo home run from Cheyanne Masterson.
South Dakota State added seven runs on eight hits, including a trio of home runs from Yoder, Masterson and Mia Jarecki to push the lead out to 8-0 after three.
The Jackrabbits starting pitcher Tori Kniesche shut the door on the Bluejays by retiring six of the last seven batters to earn the win in the circle.
Freshman pitcher Alexis Wiggins took the loss (1-1), while Sam Alm and Vejvoda recorded the only hits for the Jays in the second game.
Creighton returns to the field next Friday when they travel to Evansville, Ind. to complete in five games over three days at the Evansville Softball Invitational. The Bluejays open play on at 2 p.m. on Friday afternoon against Bowling Green.
