OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's tennis team fell to Wichita State, 5-2, during a neutral site match on Saturday afternoon at the Dillon Tennis Center in Lincoln, Nebraska.
The Bluejays move to 3-2 on the season, while Wichita State improves to 4-2.
The Shockers claimed a 6-1 triumph at the No. 3 doubles position, before Valerie Negin and Malvika Shukla teamed up for their third straight doubles win with a 6-2 victory at the No. 2 doubles position. Wichita State captured a hard-fought 6-4 win at the top slot to claim the doubles point.
The Shockers secured the overall dual with straight-sets singles victories at the No. 2, 4, 5 and 6 positions. A 6-2, 6-4 win at the fourth position clinched the match for the Shockers. Wichita State also claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 5 slot, a 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 6 singles position and a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the No. 2 position.
Junior Kate Krueger claimed a straight-sets victory at the top slot to get the Bluejays on the board. The Omaha native won the first set 6-3 before finishing off the match with a 7-5 win in the second set.
Senior Sarah Wilcox also earned a win at the No. 3 single position. Wilcox dropped the opening set 6-3 but responded with a 6-1 win in the second frame before earning the win by forfeit.
"Credit goes out to Wichita State. They have had a very strong program for a long time," said head coach Tom Lilly. "We certainly could have played better in doubles and singles but weren't able to get enough going at enough spots. A little lower in the energy today after last night's match but we can't use that as an excuse as that is college tennis. We must be able to come focused day after day and we will be better next time out."
Creighton returns to the courts on Saturday, February 19 for a match against Chicago State at 4 p.m. at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
