Nate Vontz ties for 17th place with 2-under 211 total
PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Nate Vontz, Charlie Zielinski and Shaun Campbell all finished at par or better to help the Creighton men's golf team to a seventh place finish at the GCU Invitational, which wrapped up on Tuesday in Phoenix, Ariz.
CU posted scores of 282, 278 and 292 for an 852 total. The second round 278 total ranks as the program's second best score in the last 20 years, trailing only a 275 compiled earlier this season on Oct. 4, 2021, at Stampede At The Creek.
Vontz tied for 17th place after scores of 68, 71 and 72 for a 211 total. The fifth-year senior from Lincoln now owns 32 career rounds of par or better, three shy of John Sutko's school record.
Zielinski opened with back-to-back 69s before a closing round 74 as he placed tied for 21st. The sophomore has now been par or better in 16-of-42 career rounds as a Bluejay.
Coming in a tie for 27th was Campbell after an even-par 213. He opened with a 72 before firing a collegiate-best 67, only to close with a 74.
Cade McCallum tied for 46th place following scores of 73, 71 and 72. Rounding out the Bluejay line-up was Jackson Thompson, who tied for 89th following loops of 76, 73 and 74.
Tournament host Grand Canyon won the event with an 18-under total of 834, good enough to defeat Fresno State by four shots. UT Arlington's Kyle Cox (66-68-68) won the event with an 11-under total of 202, which gave him a two shot victory over Fresno State's Michael Cliff.
The tournament was played on the GCU Championship Golf Course, which was played to a par 71 layout. The course measured 7,148 yards for the first two rounds before being lengthened to 7,202 for the final round.
The Bluejays are back in action on April 16-17 at the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa.
