Bluejays return after two-week layoff with a victory
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's tennis team returned to action after two weeks off with a 6-1 win over visiting Oral Roberts on Friday, March 25, at Hanscom Indoor Tennis Center.
The Bluejays improve to 8-3 with their fourth straight win while Oral Roberts dropped to 8-7 and had a five-match win streak snapped.
"It was a tough win," said Creighton head coach Tom Lilly. "The 6-1 score doesn't reflect how close this match was. There was a time in the middle where it seemed we may lose 5-2, but our girls were very resilient, and I am proud of how we competed for a full three hours and never giving in when things didn't look so good on some courts."
Creighton won the doubles point with a pair of victories. Meredith Benson and Gabby O'Connor earned a 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles. Minutes later, Valerie Negin and Malvika Shukla clinched the doubles point with an identical 6-3 triumph at No. 2 doubles.
Benson continued her winning ways by claiming CU's first point in singles play as well, defeating Luna Morini in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) at the No. 5 spot. It was Benson's fifth straight victory in singles action.
Allison Wilcox stretched the Bluejay lead to 3-0 with a 7-5, 6-4 win at the No. 6 slot over ORU's Zere Iskacova.
Negin clinched the victory for CU with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 triumph over Zere Lebedeva at No. 3 singles in her first completed three set match of the spring. Negin improved to 8-2 on the season and like Benson, has also won five straight singles contests.
Senior Sarah Wilcox kept CU's momentum going with a 6-2, 7-5 triumph over Reagan Miley. Wilcox now owns a team-leading 33 career singles victories and has won seven of her past eight showings.
Shukla closed out the Bluejay victory when she pulled out a three-set win over Arina Sorokina at No. 4 singles. The Bluejay sophomore is now 8-3 this season and 16-3 in her collegiate career.
ORU's lone point came at No. 1 singles, where Oleksandra Nahurska outlasted Bluejay junior Kate Krueger. Nahurska won the first set 6-3 before Krueger evened the match with a 6-4 win in the second set. Nahurska answered with a 6-2 victory in the final set.
The Bluejays return to the court on Saturday, March 26th at 4:30 p.m. when it hosts Drake at Hanscom Indoor Tennis Center.
