Nielsen and Rosonke Lead Bluejays To Opening Day Split at Evansville Softball Invitational

Cayla Nielsen and Emma Rosonke each went 3-for-4 in the win over Green Bay
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Creighton softball team split a pair of games during the first day of the Evansville Softball Invitational in Evansville, Indiana. The Bluejays defeated Green Bay 11-2 in six innings after falling to Bowling Green 4-1.
Creighton moved its season record to 8-6 after finishing the day 1-1.
Sophomore's Cayla Nielsen and Emma Rosonke each went 3-for-4 with a double, while Rosonke smacked her fourth home run of the season as the Bluejays downed Green Bay, 11-2, in the night cap of day one.
In game one, the Bluejays scored their lone run of the game in the first inning as Nielsen launched her third home run of the season over the left field wall, giving the Bluejays an early 1-0 lead.
Junior Mikayla Santa Cruz held the Falcons scoreless until the fourth inning when Peyton Dolejs laced a bases clearing single to the center field wall to push Bowling Green out in front 3-1.
Bowling Green tacked on an additional run in the bottom of the sixth when Sarah Gonzalez cracked a home run to left center, extending the lead out to 4-1.
Santa Cruz struck out seven and gave up eight hits but was tagged with the loss, while Payton Gottshall earned the win for the Falcons.
In game two, the Bluejays scored early and often with a run in the second, two in the third, three in the fourth, one in the fifth and four in the sixth to capture an 11-2 win in six innings over Green Bay
Ryann Glenn, who pinch hit for Brittney Manthie, got the Bluejays on the board first with a RBI-single to left field as Josey Marquette crossed the plate for the first run of the game in the top of the second.
Green Bay evened things up at 1-1 in the bottom half of the second inning with a solo home run by Jadin Justman, but it was all Jays from that point on.
Nielsen led off the third with a single through the right side before stealing second and advancing to third on a sac bunt by Kiara Mills. Nielsen then put Creighton back on top by scoring on a pass ball to give the Bluejays a 2-1 lead. After Sam Alm was hit by a pitch, junior Kailey Wilson singled through the left side setting Rosonke up with runners on first and second. Rosonke then added to the Bluejays lead with a RBI single up the middle, as Alm scored from second.
The Bluejays tacked on three more runs in the fourth, all with two outs, as Alm delivered an RBI single to center field. Madeline Vejvoda got things started with a singled to left, while Nielsen drew a walk. Alm drove Vejvoda in with the single and later scored as Wilson delivered a 2-run single to left, extending the Jays lead out to 6-1.
Green Bay's Alicia Peters cut Creighton's lead down to 6-2 with a solo shot to right field in the bottom half of the fourth, but Creighton added another run in the fifth as Vejvoda drove in Nielsen, who doubled to lead off the inning, with an RBI single through the right side of the infield.
After a scoreless fifth by the Phoenix, Creighton tacked on four runs in the sixth to run-rule Green Bay, 11-2. Sydra Seville and Gappa were each hit by a pitch before Rosonke launched her fourth home run of the year over the right field wall to extend the Bluejays lead out to 10-2. Manthie then drew a walk and scored as Nielsen lined a double into the left centerfield gap, pushing the Jays advantage out to 11-2.
Freshman Alexis Wiggin closed the door on Green Bay in the bottom of the sixth and collected her second complete game win of the season. Wiggins struck out eight batters and allowed just four hits in the game.
The Bluejays collected a season-high 13 hits and 11 runs as Nielsen and Rosonke each had three hits and Vejvoda and Wilson collected two hits apiece.
Creighton will return to the field tomorrow afternoon with a 2 p.m. first pitch contest against Oakland. The Bluejays will also battle Green Bay again tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
