Softball Offense Explodes In Pair Of Wins On Second Day Of Evansville Softball Invitational

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Creighton's offense manufactured 22 runs on 25 hitsto sweep day two of the Evansville Softball Invitational. The Bluejays opened the day with a 14-6 run-rule victory over Oakland before downing Green Bay 8-0 in five innings on Saturday at Cooper Stadium in Evansville, Indiana.
The pair of wins lifts the Bluejays overall record to 10-6.
In game one, Creighton jumped on Oakland with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Cayla Nielsen started things off with a double into centerfield and scored on a single up the middle from Kiara Mills. Sam Alm followed with a double down the left field line, which allowed Mills to score from first and give the Bluejays a 2-0 lead. Following a pair of walks by Kailey Wilson and Emma Rosonke, senior Shayna Dahlen belted a two-run double to the left field wall extending the Jays lead to 4-0.
Creighton added to their lead in the second as Mills launched her second home run of the season over the centerfield fence, giving the Bluejays a 5-0 lead after the second frame.
Oakland cut into the Bluejays lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Jessie Munson led off the inning with a single and later scored on a single by Madison Jones. Jones scored herself on a sacrifice fly by Cammie Brummitt.
Creighton tacked on a run of their own in the third as Kailey Wilson led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch. Kate Mason pinch ran for Wilson and scored on a sacrifice fly by Rosonke to give the Jays an 6-2 lead.
The Golden Grizzles added three more runs in the top of the fourth to cut the Jays lead down to one at 6-5. Munson drove in a pair of runs with a single into centerfield before crossing the plate herself as Maci Brown reached on an error.
The Bluejays pushed the lead right back out to seven as the Jays plated six on just four hits and one Oakland error in the bottom half of the fourth. Nielsen got things started once again with a single to center before stealing second. Back-to-back walks by Mills and Alm loaded the bases for Wilson. Wilson then delivered a two-run single to centerfield, lifting the Jays advantage out to 8-5. Following a groundout, Rosonke lifted a fly ball out to left field, which allowed Alm to score from third. Dahlen was then hit by a pitch before Saren Croker lined a single to left field scoring Wilson to give Creighton a 10-5 advantage. The Jays were not done there as Madeline Vejvoda cleared the bases with a doubled to the left center wall, pushing the Jays out in front, 12-5.
Both teams were held scoreless in the fifth, but Oakland added a run on a single by Reese Ruhlman in the top of the sixth.
Creighton closed out the game in the sixth as Mills scored redshirt freshman Elly Beeson on a single up the middle. Alm then singled to right field scoring Nielsen from second to give Creighton the 14-6 victory.
The Bluejays set a new season-highs with 14 runs on 15 hits, while freshman Alexis Wiggins earned her third win of the season in the circle. Mills and Dahlen each recorded three hits while Nielsen and Mills each scored three runs for the Bluejays.
In game two, the Jays continued right where they left off in game one. Creighton scored one in the first, five in the second and two in the third, while junior Mikayla Santa Cruz tossed a two-hit shutout as the Jays run-ruled Green Bay 8-0 in five innings.
Nielsen again got the Bluejays started with a single to left center before Mills beat out an infield single. Following a groundout by Wilson, Alm reached on an error by the Phoenix, which allowed Nielsen to cross the plate for the first run of the game.
The Bluejays continued their dominant offensive performance in the second inning as Megan Miklesh drew a six-pitch walk, Vejvoda reached on an error and Nielsen drove Miklesh in on a single to center. Mills singled to center as well scoring Vejvoda from third before Wilson cleared the bases with a three-run home run over the center field fence to give Creighton a 6-0 lead.
Creighton wrapped up the scoring in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs to extend the lead out to 8-0. Vejvoda singled and advanced to third on an error by Green Bay's centerfielder before Nielsen capped off a 3-for-3 game with a single to right field, which allowed Vejvoda to score. Mills then singled to left before Wilson reached on a fielder's choice. Nielsen scored on the play after a throwing error by the Phoenix's second baseman.
The Bluejays will wrap up their stay at the Evansville Softball Invitational with a 11:30 a.m. contest against the host Evansville at Cooper Stadium.
