Men’s Tennis Takes Down Butler, 4-3, For First BIG EAST Victory

Casey Ross clinched the match with a three set victory at the top singles slot.
ORLANDO, Fla. – The Creighton men's tennis team captured their first BIG EAST victory of the season with a 4-3 win over Butler on Tuesday afternoon at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
Creighton improved to 5-5 on the year and 1-1 in BIG EAST player with the win, while Butler falls to 4-7 overall and 0-1 in the BIG EAST.
The Bluejays started the match the strong by winning the doubles point. Stratton Brown and Jose Oscar Diaz teamed up at the No. 2 spot and made quick work of Michael Dickson and Drew Michael, 6-1, before Shin Inoue and Zach Maline clinched the early 1-0 lead with a 6-3 win over Patrick Joss and Zach Trimpe at the No. 3 doubles position.
Diaz got singles play off to a promising start for the Bluejays with a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Borja Miralles at the No. 3 singles spot. Matthew Lanahan followed suit by earning a 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over Michael Karr at the No. 5 singles to give the Bluejays a 3-0 lead in the match.
Butler responded with wins at the No.2, No. 3 and No. 6 single spots to knot the match up at 3-3. With the match riding on the victor of the top singles match, it was senior Casey Ross came up clutch for the Jays.
Ross grabbed an early advantage with a -2 win in the first set, but Butlers Thomas Brennan answered with a 6-4 victory in the second frame to force a decisive third set. With the match on the line, Ross rallied to clinch the match with a 7-5 triumph in the third set.
"I have been coaching a long time and I am proud of many accomplishments by the teams," said head coach Tom Lilly. "This win would go down as one of the best because of how things finished yesterday with guys cramping and getting sick. To come out in the heat and elements and win against a very good Butler team shows the grit and effort we want."
Creighton continues play tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. when they square off against Sacred Heart at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
