Rosonke’s Perfect Outing Powers Bluejays Past St. John’s, 7-1

The Bluejays captured their first win at St. John's since April 27, 2014
Queens, N.Y. – Sophomore Emma Rosonke went 4-for-4 from the plate and drove in four runs as the Creighton softball team claimed a 7-1 victory over St. John's on Friday afternoon at Red Storm Field. Friday's win was the Bluejays first win in Queens, N.Y. since defeating St. John's 4-0 on April 27, 2014, the Bluejays first year in the BIG EAST.
The Bluejays improve to 14-12 on the year and 4-4 in BIG EAST play with the win, while St. John's falls to 6-24 overall and 1-9 in conference action.
The Bluejays opened the scoring in the top of the third inning with three runs on just two hits but earned three walks during the frame. Junior Brittney Manthie got the Bluejays started with a six-pitch walk before advancing to third on a single from sophomore Madeline Vejvoda. Following another walk by Kailey Wilson, junior Kiara Mills drew the third walk of the inning to bring Manthie in for the Bluejays first run of the game. Rosonke then extend the Bluejays lead with a two-run double into left field to give Creighton a 3-0 advantage.
Creighton added a run in each of the next two inning to grab a 5-0 lead. Cayla Nielsen plated the freshman Sydra Seville in the top of the fourth with an RBI single into left field after Shayna Dahlen reached on an error and Vejvoda drew another walk. Rosonke started the fifth with a single, her third hit of the game, before junior Sam Alm pushed her across the plate with an RBI double to the left centerfield wall to extend the Jays lead to 5-0.
St. John's plated their lone run of the game on a solo home run by Natalie Alheidt in the bottom half of the fifth inning to make the score 5-1 after five complete.
Both teams went scoreless in the sixth before the BIG EAST Player of the Week (Rosonke) blasted her eighth home run of the season to give Creighton a 7-1 lead. Mills opened the top of the frame with a single into right field before Rosonke launched a home run over the right centerfield wall to collect her sixth 4-RBI game of the season.
Rosonke went a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate with a single, double and home run while driving in another 4-RBI for the sixth time this season. Rosonke is the only Bluejays in the last 23 years to have six four-RBI games in a single season. Six other Bluejays picked up at least one hit while Nielsen collected two hits on the day. Creighton finished the afternoon with 11 hits while also drawing a season-high six walks.
Junior Kate Mullally earned her fourth win of the year, tossing 5.1 innings while only allowing one run on eight Red Storm hits. Classmate Mikayla Santa Cruz did not give up a hit in 1.2 innings of work after inherited runs on second and third in the bottom of the sixth and working her way out of the jam.
Due to rain expected in the forecast, Sunday's game has been moved to Saturday. The Bluejays and Red Storm will now play a doubleheader tomorrow with game one set to begin at 11 a.m. CT.
