Softball Suffers Pair of Losses Against St. John’s During Saturday Doubleheader

QUEENS, N.Y – The Creighton softball team dropped both games during a BIG EAST doubleheader against St. John's on Saturday at Red storm Field in Queens, N.Y. The Red Storm won 9-8 in the first game and 3-1 during the second gamer to claim the series win.
The pair of losses drops the Bluejays to 14-14 on the year and 4-6 in BIG EAST play, while St. John's improves to 8-24 overall and 3-9 in conference action this season.
Creighton held an 8-5 lead entering the bottom of the seventh during the first game of the day. St. John's would then plate four runs on three hits and three walks, including a walk-off single by Anna Freveletti to earn a 9-8 win.
The Bluejays opened the game strong with five straight hit to take an 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Cayla Nielsen got things started with a single to left while junior Kailey Wilson followed suit with a single to center. Junior Kiara Mills then blasted a three-run home run, her third home run of the season, over the right field fence to give the Bluejays an eearly advantage. Emma Rosonke and Alyssa Gappa also singled in the inning but were left stranded on base.
The Red Storm answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the first inning to even things up at 3-3.
St. John's took the lead in the third as London Jarrard led off the inning with a double and stole third. Natalie Casto drew a walk and stole second before Jarrard and Cast scored on a pair of groundouts to take a 5-3 lead.
The Bluejays plated one in the top of the fifth as Rosonke reached on an error which allowed Nielsen to score to make the score 5-4 in favor of the Red Storm.
Creighton would then take the lead with four runs in the sixth on three hits. Junior Sam Alm doubled to left to open up the inning and advanced on a wild pitch before Shayna Dahlen and Ryann Glenn loaded the bases with back-to-back walks. Madeline Vejvoda was then hit by a pitch, which allowed Alm to cross the plate and even the game back up at 5-5. Following an out, Wilson lined a two-run double into the left center gap to put the Jays up 7-5. Mills tacked on another run for the Bluejays with a double of her own into the right centerfield gap to give Creighton an 8-5 lead.
Alm led the Bluejays offense in game one with three hits, while the top six batters in the Bluejays lineup each collected at least a hit. Junior Mikayla Santa Cruz was tagged with the loss after striking out five in 6.2 innings of work.
In game two, junior Kate Mullally took a no-hitter into the fourth inning before a single by Jarrard broke up the no-no with two outs in the frame. Jarrard would come around to score as Casto lined an RBI single into right center to give the Red Strom the 1-0 lead.
Creighton knotted thing up at 1-1 in the top of the sixth as Wilson singled to right field to open the inning. Pinch runner Megan Miklesh advanced to second on a groundout by Mills before scoring on an RBI double to left center by Alyssa Gappa.
St. John's grabbed the lead right back in the bottom half of the frame with a pair of runs. Meisha Murray reached on an error to start the inning for the Red Storm. Murray stole second and third before scoring on a throwing error on the steal to third. The Red Storm tacked on an addition run as Jarrard doubled to right and Casto drew a four-pitch walk before Anese Thompson drove in Jarrard with a double down the left field line to give St. John's a 3-1 advantage.
Wilson went 2-for-4 from the plate while five other Bluejays recorded a hit in the contest. Mullally dropped her overall record to 4-3 after allowing just four hits and striking out a career-high eight batters in the loss.
The Bluejays return to action next weekend with a three-game series at UConn set begin on Friday, April 8 at 5 p.m.
