The Bluejays end the regular season with an 8-9 record.
OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton men's tennis team closed the regular season with a 6-1 victory over Doane on Friday at the Hanscom Tennis Center. The Bluejays also celebrated the accomplishments of their two seniors: Jose Oscar Diaz and Stratton Brown.
Creighton improved to 8-9 this season with the win, while Doane fell to 8-5 on the year.
"It was a solid match to end the regular season," said head coach Tom Lilly. "Stratton competed but didn't have his A game and his strong forehand let him down too many times against a player who was doing a lot of good things and playing well. Jose and Stratton have both had great careers and have done a fantastic job on and off the court for us."
Creighton gained an early 1-0 edge on Friday with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions to claim the first point of the match. Diaz and Matthew Lanahan combined for a 6-1 win at the top position, while Ethan Neil and Brown teamed up for a 6-0 win at the No. 3 slots. Shin Inoue and Zack Maline also paired up for a 6-2 victory at the No. 2 doubles position for the Bluejays.
During singles action, Creighton won in straight-sets at five of the six single positions.
Lanahan started the singles results by not dropping a game on the way to a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 4 singles slot. Inoue shortly after secured a 6-2, 6-0 straight-sets win at the No. 2 slot to push the Bluejays lead out to 3-0.
Diaz then clinched the match for the Bluejays by earning a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at the No. 3 singles position. It was the fourth time this season Diaz has clinched the match for the Bluejays.
Neil extended the Bluejays lead out to 5-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 straight-sets victory at the No. 5 spot, while Maline won 6-0, 6-3 respectfully at the No. 6 singles position.
Doane closed out the match with a 7-5, 6-7, 10-7 win at the top singles positions for their lone point of the match. It was the first point the Tigers had earned on the Bluejays since at least late 1970's.
Creighton returns to the courts next Friday for the start of the BIG EAST Championships in Cayce, South Carolina.
