Women’s Tennis Earns No. 7 Seed For BIG EAST Championship, Opens Play Against Seton Hall

Bluejays will face 10-seeded Seton Hall in opening round on Thursday
OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton women's tennis earned the No. 7 seed for the 2022 BIG EAST Tennis Championships Presented by JEEP in Cayce, South Carolina, the league announced on Monday afternoon. The Bluejays will open tournament play on Thursday at 8 a.m. (Central) against 10th-seeded Seton Hall.
Creighton wrapped up the regular season with an 11-7 record, including a 1-2 record against league opponents. The Bluejays on lone BIG EAST win this season came versus Providence (5-1) in Orlando, Fla. The Pirates enter the postseason sporting a 6-12 record (0-6 BIG EAST).
Creighton and Seton Hall have never meet in the BIG EAST Tournament and have only meet once before in Orlando. The Pirates bested the Bluejays 6-1 in the two teams only meeting.
Freshman Valerie Negin and sophomore Malvika Shukla lead the Blujeays with 21 victories each. Negin has claimed 12 wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 singles slot while Shukla has captured 12 wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 singles positions. Negin and Shukla have also teamed up for six wins at the No. 2 doubles spot and have also paired with Sarah Wilcox and Kate Krueger for a trio of wins each.
Senior Sarah Wilcox also paces the Bluejays with 12 singles victories. The Kansas native is 12-4 at the No. 3 singles position. The senior also owns an 8-5 record at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles slots.
Senior Meredith Benson and Krueger have also hit double digit wins in singles play postion 10 victories apiece. Krueger owns a 10-7 overall record at the No. 1 singles spot this season She has also claimed seven victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions. Benson has claimed 10 single victories at the No. 4 and No. 5 positions, while posting seven wins at the No. 3 doubles position with Gabby O'Connor, Allison Wilcox and Jeanne Gearity.
Creighton finished 1-1 at the 2021 BIG EAST Tennis Championships. The Bluejays earned the No. 6 seed before knocking off Providence in the first round, 4-0, and falling in the quarterfinals to No. 3 Villanova, 0-4.
Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center will host the BIG EAST Championships for the sixth straight year. The Facility offers 30 lighted world-class courts with a championship-sized stadium court that has a viewing capacity of approximately 500 spectators.
Seeding for the championships were determined by a committee that reviews each team's regular-season schedule, ITA ranking, results against BIG EAST and common non-conference opponents and wins/losses against ranked foes.
The winner of Thursday's Creighton-Seton Hall match will face second-seeded Marquette on Friday at 11:45 a.m. Central. The Bluejays fell to the Golden Eagles, 5-2, in Milwaukee on April 1.
The Men's and Women's Championship matches will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) Presented by SoFi on FloSports. The Men's Championship broadcast begins at 9 a.m. ET on Sunday, and the Women's Championship coverage starts at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
