Softball Drops Midweek Crosstown Duel With Omaha, 9-3

OMAHA, Neb. – An early 6-0 deficit and three fielding errors haunted the Bluejays as the Creighton softball team dropped a 9-3 decision to Omaha on Tuesday night at the Creighton Sports Complex.
The loss drops the Bluejays to 14-21 on the year, while the Mavericks improved their overall record to 20-12.
Omaha stormed out to an early 6-0 lead after plating four in the first and two more in the second innings. The Mavericks opened the game with a double, single and a walk before scoring two runs came across to score on a single bby Rachel Weber. A fielding error by the Bluejays allowed the Mavericks to push their lead to 3-0, while a single by Sydney Ross extend the lead to 4-0.
Omaha would plate two more in the second as Lynsey Tucker laced a RBI double into the left center gap and Jamie White fired a RBI single through the left side of the infield to make it 6-0.
Junior Kiara Mills would make the first dent on the scoreboard for the Bluejays in the bottom half of the second inning. The California native launched a solo home run to straight away center to led off the inning and cut the score to 6-1.
The Mavericks added a single run in the top of the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Ross, after Jaelle Johnson doubled and stole third to lead off the inning, giving Omaha a 7-1 lead.
The Bluejays cut the deficit to four in the bottom of the fourth inning as Junior Kailey Wilson tattooed a two-run home run over the scoreboard well beyond the right field wall for her eight home run of the season.
Omaha would plate another run in both the sixth and seventh innings to walk away with 9-3 victory over the Bluejays.
Wilson led the Bluejays with a pair of hits, her 13th multi-hit game this season, including a home run and a pair of RBI. Mills also hit a home run for the Bluejays, her fifth of the season, while Sam Alm and Alyssa Gappa each collected one hit apiece.
Junior Mikayla Santa Cruz suffered her eighth loss of the season after allowing seven runs on eight hits. Freshman Alexis Wiggins provided a spark for the Bluejays striking out six batters in 4.1 innings of work. Sydney Hampton earned her second win of the season, tossing 2.0 innings and allowing just two Bluejays hits.
The Bluejays resume BIG EAST play this weekend with a three-game set at Butler. Game one of the series is scheduled for Friday at 2:00 p.m. central time.
