Jared Wegner homers twice and Jack Grace delivers the game-winning RBI
OMAHA, Neb. -- Jared Wegner homered twice, but it was an intentional walk to the Bluejay junior that set the stage for Jack Grace's game-winning two-run double in Creighton Baseball's 5-3 victory over The Citadel on Saturday, April 2.
Creighton improved to 14-7 and tied a park record with its 10th straight home win dating to last season, while The Citadel dropped to 17-9 on the year with its second straight setback.
Wegner went 3-for-3 on the day while scoring three times. In the process, he became just the fifth Bluejay ever with two homers in a game in the 12-year history of Charles Schwab Field Omaha.
Andrew Meggs led off the bottom of the first inning with a double to the wall in left, then advanced 90 feet on fly balls by Nolan Sailors and Alan Roden to score the game's first run.
The Bulldogs wasted no time retaking the lead against Bluejay starter Dominic Cancellieri. A one-out walk to Noah Mitchell proved costly as Travis Lott followed with an infield single that was confirmed by replay review. Ben Hutchins tied the game with a double to left and he and Lott both scored on Crosby Jones' single up the middle as the Bulldogs moved in front, 3-1.
CU halved the deficit to one with a homer from Wegner to lead off the bottom of the fourth, his team-leading fourth round-tripper of the season.
Wegner then launched Fisher Paulsen's first offering of the sixth inning into the bleachers in left-center. The 428-foot blast tied the game at 3-3.
Just as they did in Friday night's 11-2 win, the Bluejay bats came alive in the bottom of the seventh inning. Alan Roden's chopper down the third base line went for a double against the Bulldog shift. Wegner was intentionally walked before Grace deposited an 0-0 pitch from Devin Beckley to the warning track in center, scoring Roden and Wegner and giving CU a 5-3 lead.
Cancellieri threw into the seventh with a season-long 6.1 innings of work, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out a pair to lower his ERA to 4.86. Paul Bergstrom (2-1) notched four outs to earn the win and Tommy Steier closed out the Bulldogs in the ninth to earn his fourth save.
Jones and Wesley Lane each had two hits, but the first seven hitters in the Bulldog line-up combined to go 2-for-27 at the plate. Paulsen threw five innings and allowed three runs before Beckley (4-2) picked up the final nine outs.
Creighton and The Citadel will wrap up their series on Sunday at Noon in a game that will be webcast by FloSports.
