VERMILLION, S.D. – The Creighton softball team fell to South Dakota, 4-0, in the Bluejays final non-conference midweek contest of the season on Tuesday night at Nygaard Field in Vermillion, South Dakota.
The Bluejays move their season record to 14-25, while South Dakota improves their overall record to 24-20.
The Coyotes placed the first crooked number on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs. Aleesia Sainz led off the inning with a double deep into the left center gap before moving to third on a single back up the middle by Tatum Villotta. Following a stolen base by Villotta, Rylee Nicholson delivered a two run double down the left field line to give the Coyotes a 2-0 lead.
South Dakota extend their lead in the home half of the third as Sainz drew a five-pitch walk to open the frame. Following a groundout that moved Sainz to second and a Bluejay strikeout, Nicholson and Gabby Moser hit back-to-back doubles to push the Coyotes lead out to 4-0 after three complete.
After getting nothing going through the first five innings of the game the Bluejays threatened to plate their first run of the game in the sixth inning. Sophomore Cayla Nielsen got the Bluejays started with a single into the left centerfield gap and advanced to second on a groundout by junior Brittney Manthie before being left stranded on second.
South Dakota's Clara Edwards retired the remaining Bluejays in order to earn her 13th victory of the season. Freshman Alexis Wiggins (3-5) suffered the loss after allowing three hits and two earned runs in one inning of work. Junior Mikayla Santa Cruz struck out three and allowed just four hits and a pair of runs in 5.0 innings of relief.
Nielsen and junior Kiara Mills each collected a hit to lead the Bluejays.
The Bluejays will wrap up the regular season this weekend with a three-game home series against DePaul, which is set to begin on Friday at 3 p.m.
